Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

I have a Sony KP-57WS500 CRT rear projection TV. The convergance has suddenly gone awry. The red and blue are both out of line and by quite a bit. The red is off by 1/2" or so. This TV has the automatic convergance button. Normally, you push this button and there is a sequence of flashing colored targets on the screen. Using these targets inan automated sequence, the TV self aligns. Not this time. Normally, this convergance adjustment process takes several seconds to complete. Now, when you push the button, the TV immediately returns to the normal full image. It's as if the auto circuit thinks the convergance is OK and it has no work to do. I know there is the real possibility that something has broken in there but, as I have some experience with CRT front projectors, if I knew how to get to the manual convergance setting mode on this set, I could certainly do a regular convergance adjustment. So, what is the way into the serviceman mode on this TV? Is this problem of a sudden lack of convergance a symptom of a problem that is greater than a simple adjustment can likey remedy? Thanks Tom

If the TV does not keep the presets and keeps loosing convergence, then using the service convergence procedure won't fix the problem.

In that case you will need to replace the two STKs mounted on convergence board. Those are the convergence ICs, see convergence board picture below:

I have a Sony KP-57WS500 - 8f0b4fa.jpg

The job consists in de-soldering old ICs and soldering new ones on convergence board. Better using coolant paste.

The convergence ICs are about $10 each (there are two of them). The job done by a professional is about $300.
The replacement ICs can be purchased on-line, from shops like Partstore or Vance Baldwin (encompass).

Here also all Service procedures for your Sony. Be careful when in service mode, some of the commands may damage the TV.

Service mode on NTSC TV.

Service mode on PAL TV.

My TV (module # KP-57WS500) is in a weird double vision view as if it is in 3D. with blue, red, colors. top and bottom of the screen also curve into the center of the tv. worked perfectly fine night...

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Re-insering the flyback wire is usually very easy. Push in and give a slght turn and check to see if grabbed. It sounds as if there is more issues than flyback wire. TV should turn on without one crt connected

Sony KP-57WS500 Pictures problem

Your Convergence Correction Amplifier ICs have gone bad (STK329-110) They must be replaced along with the biasing resistors

www.electronix.com has the parts you will need plus I would suggest that you have a qualified TV repair person do the installation for you.

Make sure the traces on the circuitboard are good and that the solder connections are good.

But the ICs and resistors need to be replaced.

Thank you,
