Lexmark X5150 All-In-One InkJet Printer

Problem printing w/ Lexmark X5150 (by 2 users)

By lawyer - usenet poster

I use Microsoft ME, and have an all-in-one Lexmark X5150,
with a USB cord, and the USB was pre-installed on my
computer, which is an e-machines. I've tried uninstalling
and reinstalling the printer numerous times, and using
both a USB 1.0 and 2.0 cord. neither helps. I can scan to
the computer, but I can't print. I get a print out
directly from the printer when I put the printer
cartridges in. But I can't even do a test page from the
computer. When i try to print something, the computer
thinks it is sending it to the printer and doesn't give me
any error message, but the printing job never gets to the
printer. I did notice when I check on printer status thru
the lexmark software that it says the printer is "output
to file" instead of to printer. The lexmark techs were
absolutely no help, and said the problem must be with my
computer, which is quite possible, but what is it? Anyone
have a clue? I'm about ready to return this printer.

Yeah, it works great! Thanks! I've already spread the word
to folks I know to stay away from Lexmark. Like you said,
the tech support leaves much to be desired.

Noel, you are now the official forever love of my
life!!!!  THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! I've been
working on this problem for 2 weeks now, worked with
Lexmark techs for hours (not to mention the hold time on
the phone), looked at both lexmark.com and the emachines
web sites (I have an etower 566i2), and nothing to help
me. After looking at this board, I saw a note about trying
a USB 1.0 instead of 2.0 chord, so that plus your help,
and I was able to get my printer to print, and correctly
communicated to and from my computer. I was ready to bring
a sledge hammer to both the printer and computer! THANK
YOU! This Microsoft board is a life saver! From now on,
this is the first place I'm coming to if I ever have any
future problems with my computer or it's components! YOU
ROCK!!

Start|Settings|Printers - select your Printer, and r-click - select
Properties.
click on the Details tab
There should be a drop-down box labelled 'Print to the following port:' -
what does that say?
click on the down  arrow at the right of the box - that should give you the
list of ports available for the printer - one of them should be named USB-
<whatever> - highlight/select that one, and then click Apply, and OK

See if that turns the trick!

Believe it or not, I've tried that too. It does say USB,
but specifically, it says "usb001 (unknown local
printer)". I'm wondering if the fact that it says "unknown
local printer" makes a difference.  I'm also wondering if
this particular computer (emachines) or the OS (Windows
ME), or even the combination of the two, has some sort of
problem with a UBS port. The computer thinks it is
communicating with the printer, but nothing happens with
the printer, and the status is "output to file". I've
about had it with this thing, but I'm thinking whatever
the problem is, if it is with the UBS port, then I'll have
that problem regardless of what type of printer I have,
and may have to get a new computer (it is extremely out of
date, in computer time, I got it in 2000). Does any one
know another way to change the "output to file", or if
there have been problems with either emachines from the
year 2000, or OS Windows ME in relation to USB ports?

should be named USB-

I agree on the taking back response. If I don't get this
printer working by this weekend, I probably will. I had a
feeling the output to file message meant it wasn't going
to printer, but I can't figure out how to change it. Do
you have an idea? Thanks!

Temperance - you need to reinstall the printer drivers.
First disconnect the printer
then uninstall the drivers/programs from Add/Remove Programs
Then Remove the drivers from Device Manager
Then Reboot - and install the Software again - following the manufacturer's
instructions completely.

I take it the thing works, then?<g>
Your experiences with the Lexmark are about par for the course - they seem
to be the most inept bunch of driver-writers imaginable.
Expect to have to reinstall the drivers every month or so, as they're not
likely to be stable:(
As far as their Tech 'Support' goes - I'm just surprised they didn't try to
get you to reformat and reinstall the OS (it's usually around the second
thing they suggest, from what I hear).

Whatever - I'm glad it worked for you,

 Good Luck

Print to file means that the data is not sent to the printer. It needs to be
changed.

If you are unhappy with Lexmarks customer service/help, by all means take
the printer back.
