Question about Tannoy Precision 8 Main / Stereo Speaker

Tannoy precision 8D distortion and cuts out

Bought a set of these less than a year ago. The past few weeks my right monitor started crackling off and on and the volume cuts in and out. I never record at loud volumes and I have the volume knobs on the back up to only half volume. I do put my keyboards through them while recording but never at loud volumes I use a Toneport UX2 for my I/O. I've tried switching cables, channels, basically everything but the problem persists.

Any Ideas

Re: tannoy precision 8D distortion and cuts out

I had a similar problem with a pair of 8d. On both speakers, the low cut switch (on the built in amplifier) was bad. If you wiggled it, it would sound good for awhile and then cut out again. One speaker sounded thin and the other one slightly distorted.
I called Tannoy USA, they fixed them free of charge even though they were out of warranty. They were very accommodating. I did not have to haggle or argue with them with them to get the repairs done. All I paid for was shipping the speakers to them.

My Paradigm PDR 12 subwoofer has started to make crackling noises. Is this an amplifier malfunction?

Depends when it makes these crackling noises.

If it's when the sub isn't being driven, then it could be the amp. (Check for bulging capacitors on the amp board). If it's when you move cables about then it could be a broken lead or a dry solder joint on one of the inputs.

If the crackling is when the sub is running then it might be the voice coil has distorted due to being overdriven with a poor and highly distorted signal.

My Tannoy Active monitors are connected to a Mackie 1202 VLZ mixer and have a distinct "hiss"... any idea how to remedy this situation?

Check the gain structure through the board.
Check all the mix bus assignmentsie what is routed to the masters.
Normally hiss can be reduced with good gain structure and ensuring all not being used is correctly turned off.
Test the speakers with another suitable source
If the speaker are less hissy on the alt source and you have checked all the mixer gains and eq, it is possible the board is noisy because of some component failure. Try audio isolation transformers on the output of the board, beg or borrow a good quality pair first to test, as they are expensive.

Thanks for using FixYa, I hope this if its useful

It could be the driver or it might be the crossover, if you are happy take the driver out and check it with the amp on LOW volume. If it is blown it should be possible to get it re-coned or repaired. If the driver is ok then next step is to check the crossover.

The crossover divides the full range signal to hi and low, it will be made up of colis and capacitors with some soldered joints, there may be a faults with this. If it is a loose connection / dry joint it is easy to fix.

At all steps write down what you are doing, as this will save time and money at the repair shop.

Hope this helps, thanks for using Fixya

My Tannoy 6d monitor doesn't produce any sound

Hiya, i assume for now that you mean the 16dip switch. If i remember correctly it is solder directly to board (could be wrong). If you are comfortable with doing this, it will need to be opened and resoldered probably for dry joints. If not then suggest hunting out a friend with some solder experience. A word of caution though, shorting out solder tracks etc could result in damage so only do it if you are comfortable. If the dry joints are really bad (sound like they are) you should be able to see them clearly and resolder (look for not so bright and shiny solder that looks cracked. Magnifier helps)

Hope that helps

One possibility is that the mute switches on your speakers have oxydized contacts INSIDE the switch - this kind of malfunction mostly occurs when the equipment is exposed to moisture and/or smog.

The most common solution is to change both switches, but they can also be disassembled and cleaned up (which is a bit more complicated and time consuming).

Another possibility is a dried up filter capacitor in the power supply or somewhere in the preamplifier section, possibly also a bad preamplifier chip but if your speakers work fine (with the exception of the mute switch noise), then the problem is more likely with the switches.

Also, check the internal connectors for any dirt, broken wires or desoldered pins.

Could also be something else, you should know i'm only assuming on the possibilities and i'm listing the most common problems i've encountered so far.

One of a pair of tannoy 6 D studio monitors went out with a loud buzz and now does nothing when I turn it on. No LED light ? No Sound.

Speakers don't cause a loud buzz but amplifiers do. Is it possible that the input to the amp lost it's ground? Regardless, this is not why the speaker does nothing but you would want to correct any amplifier problem before hooking up another speaker. If as you say, absolutely nothing happens it is possible that you blew out the voice coil of one of the drivers but blowing out both the woofer and tweeter simultaneously would be unusual, not to mention that Tannoys can take quite a bit of guff. So the next possibility is that there is a problem internally with the crossover or,and I doubt that it exists, and internal fuse associated with it. Since there is an LED (and I don't know what purpose it serves) there has to be some sort of power supply (fused?) to activate it. It could be derived from the audio output of the amp but it would then pulse on and off rather than just be constantly on. Getting inside the unit with an ohmmeter would quickly determine what's going on but I don't know how this can be meaningfully diagnosed at arms length and therefore just can give you some generic ideas.

Crackling coming from Velodyne DD-10 subwoofer

One of 2 things is going on.

First, the servo mounted in the driver may be going bad or is picking up some noise.

Second, Something in the amp section is going bad, hard to pinpoint the exact problem.

you say that it plays, so I tend to think it is the driver mounted servo unit.

If it is within the warranty time, take the unit back to the retailer you purchased it from, if not contact Velodyne for repair.

Crackling coming from Velodyne DD-10 subwoofer

Velodyne is known for good service, i think in this case it is best to contact your vendor and have it solved.
I think internally there somethign wrong with the electronics, most likely the amplifier.
