  • Fish in FL Jan 20, 2008

Yes - at another location. My brother came to visit... god knows what happened but I got home t lmited connectivity... I had to plug in to LAN connection. I moved to new location with same provider and they would not look at my wirless issue. Can't I reinstall using the wizard? How do I get the required information before I start?

  • Fish in FL Jan 20, 2008

Connected now via cable to hub in router connected to modem box from Comcast

  • Fish in FL Jan 20, 2008

Exactly what information do I need to get from Comcast so I can reinstall from scratch? Is this hat I should do? What are the steps so I can do this?

  • Fish in FL Jan 20, 2008

Are you working tomorrow - it is late and this is when I make mistakes - Can we continue later? I will get with Comcast and reinstall in the morning...God willing this will fix the problem and I will be able to report back with good news.

  • Fish in FL Jan 20, 2008

Phone line NO! I don't have a landline available in th new location. Can't I use the cable connection?

At a dos prompt type ipconfig to see the ip of you pc

    ie

so router hub needs to have same default gateway, and subnet mask of pc, and the ip need to be the same except last digit needs to be unique.

Reboot router (power off, pause power on) sounds like you lost connection to internet provider.

  • Soulvisitor
    Soulvisitor Jan 20, 2008

That looks fine wireless and router are within range, other one is just when you connect via cable, Reboot the router, you have lost connection to your provider, check lights on router, namely the adsl connection.

DNS and default gateway are settings that are set by your provider they should be as they specify

ie mine is (yours will not be the same)

I'm speaking of rounters dns and Default gateway...

  • Soulvisitor
    Soulvisitor Jan 20, 2008

You can set your default gateway on wireless to 169.254.12.1

Routers ip and wireless ip should not have same last digit ie one should be 169.254.12.39 and the other as a eg 169.254.12.66

Run setup on router, you will need to know the dns settings given via provider, can you type router ip in explorer address bar and see home page of router?

While you've been asleep I've been studying your problem, I think you wireless adaptor is out of range of you router.

It looks like your routers ip range is 192.168.2.??

    and your adaptor is 169.254.12.39

also the subnet mask is wrong ie the router is 255.255.255.0

    but adaptop is 255.255.0.0

so we need to change it, I normally set mine for auto configue so I would suggeset you do that.

To change the adopters IP settings go to control panel and network settings, right click on wireless adaptor and select properties, go down to internet protocol and select properties change to auto configure or set the ip as 192.168.2.22, subnet as 255.255.255.0 and default gateway as 192.168.2.1.

    save and reboot pc

    pics from mine

  • Soulvisitor
    Soulvisitor Jan 20, 2008

no need to reconfigue router the dns settings in that must ok other wise you would have no net access when hooked in via lan

I not sure of routers ip but I know it must be 192.168.2.something from looking at your lan settings

to confirm what it is you can type in address bar of browzer 192.168.2.1 and you should get router page.

Try above suggestions from while you were asleep before resetting router or contacting comset crew.

hope this sorts you, if not post back

  • Soulvisitor
    Soulvisitor Jan 21, 2008

wireless g default ip is 192.168.2.1 so your wireless tcp setting should be 192.168.2.whatever, but not 1.

    Gateway 192.168.2.1

    Subnet 255.255.255.0

    OK?

Changing TCP/IP settings Win 7 TCP/IP defines how your computer communicates with other computers.
To make it easier to manage TCP/IP settings, we recommend using automated Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). DHCP automatically assigns Internet Protocol (IP) addresses to the computers on your network, if your network supports it. If you use DHCP, then you don't have to change your TCP/IP settings if you move your computer to another location, and DHCP doesn't require you to manually configure TCP/IP settings, such as Domain Name System (DNS) and Windows Internet Name Service (WINS). To enable DHCP or change other TCP/IP settings, follow these steps:
  1. Open Network Connections by clicking the Start button 4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33_818.jpg, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, typeadapter, and then, under Network and Sharing Center, click View network connections.
  2. Right-click the connection that you want to change, and then click Properties. 18abb370-ac1e-4b6b-b663-e028a75bf05b_48.jpg If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  3. Click the Networking tab. Under This connection uses the following items, click either Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) or Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6), and then click Properties. 25e7e385-9327-4f7d-aab0-afa5aaf952ba_49.jpgThe Network Connection Properties dialog box
  4. To specify IPv4 IP address settings, do one of the following:
    • To get IP settings automatically using DHCP, click Obtain an IP address automatically, and then click OK.
    • To specify an IP address, click Use the following IP address, and then, in the IP address, Subnet mask, and Default gateway boxes, type the IP address settings.
  5. To specify IPv6 IP address settings, do one of the following:
    • To get IP settings automatically using DHCP, click Obtain an IPv6 address automatically, and then click OK.
    • To specify an IP address, click Use the following IPv6 address, and then, in the IPv6 address, Subnet prefix length, and Default gateway boxes, type the IP address settings.
  6. To specify DNS server address settings, do one of the following:
    • To get a DNS server address automatically using DHCP, click Obtain DNS server address automatically, and then click OK.
    • To specify a DNS server address, click Use the following DNS server addresses, and then, in the Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server boxes, type the addresses of the primary and secondary DNS servers.

Tip

Why can't you connect to the Internet?

First check your TCP/IP address - see my earlier tip on checking you are connected to a network. For most recent systems, (not Linux) open a command prompt window (type "cmd" in the RUN window from the start menu) and type ipconfig /all
you should see your network adapter name and IP address, a subnet mask (don't worry) and a default gateway, also a DNS server IP address. If ANY of these are missing, that's your problem, try repairing or resetting the network adapter. WRITE THEM DOWN. You may have more than one adapter, you need to identify which one is used for the Internet connection.
If they are all there, from the SAME window type "ping" followed by the IP address of your default gateway. If this fails, you have no connection to your internet router, find out why!
If this succeeds, type "ping" again, followed by the IP address of your DNS server. If this fails, type "tracert" and then the IP address of your DNS server. The FIRST address that will be reported is your default gateway; followed by your ISP address; if the only address you see is your default gateway, the link to your ISP  is down, give them  a call. If it succeeds, from the same window type "nslookup"
You will see a chevron prompt, type in the name of the site you want to go to, e.g google.com.
You should then see a reply from your DNS server, and an IP address for your required server. If not, then either your DNS server settings are wrong OR the server does not exist. It will be obvious which it is from the reply you receive. If the DNS settings are wrong, you can change them from the Control Panel, Network, Network adapter, Properties, TCP/IP v4 properties menu; try setting DNS server to 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 and try again.

Ok. Is this a new laptop or router? I suggest you restart your internet modem, then your router and then your laptop. In that order. Letting each come online before starting the next. Then, you need to bring up your control panel screen. In that click on Network connections and look for the Connections tab. Click repair. Or if you have the internet icon in your system tray, bottom right by the clock, then right click it and choose repair. Hope this helps.

Wireless router problems

your computer is only connected to the signal coming from the router that's why it's saying connected but it seems that your router is not properly configured to provide internet access since your dns server is the same as your default gaetway. it could be that the your router is not in sync with the modem.
- if it's working before, tyr to power cycle everything by turning all the devices off then turn on the modem first, wait for all the lights on the modem to turn on then power on the router and the computer.

- if the router is for initial setup, kindly provide me you ISP, brand and model of the modem and how you connect the modem to the router and tell me if how you access the internet directly from the modem.
