Most file copy errors are RAM related. things to try are as follows:

  1. Clean the CD with a soft dry cloth and ensure no scratches or smears on data surface.
  2. If cleaning CD has no effect, then try system with individual memory modules and see if error is only associated with 1 memory module (The install error is normally copying files to or from RAMDRIVE created in RAM during install process)
  3. Run hard drive diagnostics

I get an error message boot failure

Doesn't sound too good.
Try to go into the BIOS of the computer and see if the hard disk is visible there.
To get into the BIOS you usually press either F2, Delete or F10, repeatedly, immediately after turning on the computer.
If the drive is not listed there, I would check the data and power cables are correctly connected to the mainboard and hard disk - unlikely but worth checking.
If its not a cable issue, then the hard disk may have failed.

If the drive is listed in the BIOS, I would test the hard disk for errors using a boot CD - such as Seagate's Seatools disk - its a free download, burn the image to dvd, boot from the cd and test the hard disk. It works on pretty much any disk, not just seagate drives.
If it fails to see the hard disk, I'd remove the drive and test in another system.
If it can see the drive and finds many bad sectors, I'd stop it and seek professional support if you care about your files.
Otherwise, buy a new drive, connect it up the same, and then use the recovery disks you have to install the OS again.

Hope this helps.

There was never XP available as a download. You have two choices; purchase XP via ebay ( http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_nkw=win+xp+install+disc&_frs=1) or install a new OS.

Need to reboot

if it has a recovery partition ..just press f11 on start and start to reinstall from it (completely ) ..if it is not working try from boot menu ..(press f12 on start 0 ..and in the menu choose recovery partition .
In case you do not have such partition .try from a recovery disk if you have ..or if this is not available too ..try to use a boot-able disk with a operation system image on it ..and reinstall it ..
To do so ..you need to download an image of the OS , after that burn it on the disk using a image burner ..and end up with a boot-able disk ..
Insert the disk and restart ...press f12 to bring up the boot menu ..select CD /DVD drive and enter ..it will boot from the disk and ask you to press any key to confirm ..After that will start loading files and go on with the process of installing windows.
Good luck !

Tried to reboot from the factory setting F11, came back with Loading PBR 2...done. A disk read error occured Press Ctrl Alt Del to restart, did that but the same message appears.

this a error for Primary Boot record 2..and for some reason it could not get past this stage ..I guess yo will have to install it the classic way from a bootable disk ..and to install the drivers after by downloading them from the factory site ...THis will assure a 100% success in installing the operation system and will be faster than trying to fis the error..I got this problem before...
Or better just get to the dell support site ...and get a recovery disk ..My advice is to install the operation system manually and than to use the recovery disk to install the drivers all at once ..
If you do not have a installation (bootable) disk ...just try to download and burn (with nero ) a image from the Pirate bay torrent site ..
you will need a utorrent program for downloading image file from the site ...to locate one ..just make a search for it ..there are many available ...

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=&SystemID=INS_PNT_6000&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=
here are the drivers you will need in case you manage to install a clean OS from the disk ..
remember before using a bootable disk go to bios and set the boot order to have the cd/dvd as the first boot device and save changes with F10..
after that just restart with the disk inside..confirm the action and go for it ...

Many DLL error messages on start up

Your Operating System is corrupted, probably by a virus or a program you recently installed.
The best solution would be to reinstall your Operating System (OS).
Remember to back up your data before OS installation.

I cannot find my XP disks and I am not sure my laptop came with installation disks. I want to reformat my laptop is there a way I can do that without the disks?

To reformat is to wipe everything off of your computer's harddrive. If you do not have the Recovery Disks, or an Installation Disk, you will be sitting there with a blank harddrive, and no operational computer.

I just wanted to explain that.

Most people want to restore their computer to what it was like from Day 1, when it came from the factory. For your Toshiba this is, "Recovering the original factory image"

Before you start, you may want to save any documents you have, in your My Documents folder. (My Pictures, My Music, My Video, Documents)
Burn your personal documents off to a CD, or DVD disk.
AFTER you restore back to the original factory image, they WON'T be there anymore.

Your Toshiba has a recovery partition on the harddrive.
Most computers do not have the Recovery Disks sent with them.
Saves the computer manufacturer money. They found that most users do not use the Recovery Disks, and would rather use a repair shop.

They also put the Recovery Partition on the harddrive. Plus the user is asked if they want to make a backup, (Recovery Disk), when they receive the laptop, and start it for the first time.
Problem is you are only asked once.

To recover back to the original factory image:
1.Laptop off. Press and hold down the 0 (Zero) key. Press the Power On button.

2.The Toshiba Recovery Wizard screen should appear.

3.Click on the empty circle to the left of -> Recovery of Factory Default Software.
(DO NOT click on Erase the Hard Disk!)
Click on Next

4.Click the circle for -> Recover to out-of-box-state
Click on Next

5.You'll see a warning message, "All data will be lost during the recovery process"

That's the data, (Information), you have in your My Documents folder, plus any programs you downloaded, or installed.
If they weren't there when the laptop came from the factory, they will be gone.
You know this, it's okay.

You are recovering, (Restoring), your laptop back to what it was like when it came from the factory.

Click on Next. This will start the recovery process. When it is finished a message will come up, and state that the HDD has been recovered. (HarDDrive)

Press on any key. You are finished.

What function keys do i press on startup to re insatll the operating system on my acer aspire 3690

you can use the recovery disk which came along with the laptop to reinstall the OS. There is no function key to start the installation automatically, there is a backup / restore button in some laptops which can reset the OS. Check the manual for any such button on your laptop.

HP a350n - stop message during destructive recovery

Before acquiring a new hard drive try a check disk. Boot on the OS CD-ROM - guess it's a Win XP - and through the Recovery console do a complete check disk. chkdsk /p and chkdsk /r.

Got following error: Load Error! Press any key to reboot

This problem is indeed caused by a faulty MBR but there are solutions other than zero-filling the drive.
If you can get access to a RipLinux CD there is a little utility called Testdisk that will write a new MBR code to the first block of the drive. I just did this on a Sony PCG-K15 this morning (after cloning the drive just to be safe) that was giving the same error of "LOAD ERROR- Press any key to reboot" and it worked like a charm. The machine booted right up.
Hope this helps...
