This might be a tab bit late....but most external hard drives do not come with too much info if any at all...go to start/my computer/you see the the external drive...right click on it (to get it ready for use) select properties..format it...yes/okay...now its ready for you to download any file you wish...you see the letter on it (the "c" drive is your primary drive)...this drive is your secondary drive....so when you are typing in word/excel and you want to save...you will save as (pick the drive letter)...same as music /video you will save as (pick the drive)...now right now you can click on the external hard drive it just open (blank page)..right click any where on the page..now pick new folder type "music" (this folder is where you can store music...now right click again on the page click new folder again rename it "photos' and can create folders for any thing you wish..when you save you just pick this drive/folder...feel free to rate the help

Hi there, I have a Toshiba external HDD 250GB that is giving me some problems and need some urgent help! When I plug my external HDD into my laptop everything seems to work fine. The lights come on, the...

It sounds as though your issue is one of in adequate power. Do both the external HDD have their own power source, or are they powered through USB? if they are powered through USB it may be that as soon as the second drive spins up to transfer the files, it overwhelms the limited power of the laptop. You can try it with the laptop plugged in (though this may not provide it with more power than the battery) or by purchasing a usb hub with its own external power source so that it is not drawing power from the laptop, or purchase an external hard drive with its own power source
The other option is simpler and free, and its to copy the files first to your laptops own HDD, then unplug the source external hard drive, and then plug in the drive you want to copy to, then transfer the files from your laptops hard drive. This will of course take twice as long, but will cost you nothing.

Most problems like yours are usually due to the connection not the device. Check your cable, or if you have another one try that first. If that does not solve the problem get back to me.

Hi, I haven't used this drive (Toshiba 250GB

If retreiving data is not your expertise, I suggest you take it to a local computer guy and extract it. The drive could possible be corrupt or password protected. Try best buy.

Where can I find a Mac driver from a Simpletech 250gb Marshmallow It has been formatted on a PC. I now want to reformat it and use it on my Powerbook G4 OS 10.4.7

You shouldn't need a special driver, but you do need to plug in the usb y cable to 2 usb ports. Normally 1 usb port doesn't supply enough power to make external USB drives go. That is why I prefer firewire, it supplies much more power at higher sustained rates. Once the drive is going just open the Disk Utility and format for your needs. If you need to share files with a PC, partition as MS-DOS (FAT). If you are sharing with a mac or not using the drive on other computers, format as extended with journaling.

Simpletech 500 gb external hard drive

There is a power consumption work-around untill a Y usb wire can be purchased; the main power cable must still be used at all times but this workaround should only remain temporary!!!
Simpletech should have included this so laptop users could use the drive as their capacity is better than the packaged slimmer simpletech portable backup drives for laptops, which does include the Y cable....
1) unplug usb while powered and unknown hardware is present on laptop...
2) turn power switch off from the external HDD...
3) return power switch to on from the external HDD...
4) plug in usb connection to laptop...
Autoplay should read from external HDD!!!
**** Save some $$$ and buy a Y shaped cable to provide sufficient amount of power from laptop usb
ports, cause it's necessary to use 2 of your ports to provide power in addition to the main power from HDD to wall****
