Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

I am not real sure if this is a geometry problem or not... I am a tv noob. I replaced both convergence IC's and hit the auto focus. The focus is fine but the red grid(in manual focus menu) is not square... it bends at the top and bottom edge. Is this what a geometry problem is? How do I fix it? Also the new convergence IC in the rear is running really warm, maybe even hot. The other one is cool. All resistors look good on both the power supply and convergence(?) boards.

All the 1 watt resistors looked fine. Should I pull them out one by one and test them with the ohm meter? Are we just looking at the 1 watt resistors and not the 1/4 watt's all over the place?

    Thanks

No I do not have a service manual, I wish I did though. This TV was given to me so it's just something I am messing around with a little here and there. I will pull the resistors, test them and report back.

So I download the service manual from the link you provided and it does not contain a real schematic, just some pictorials. I need to know the value of resistors RK 42 and RK 46 since they are suspect. The values are not listed in the service manual. I did a google search for RK 46 with my model number and come up with values but they do not match the color bands on the one resistor I can read(RK42 1.9 ohm). RK 46 is burnt too bad to make out the bands but I measured 3.5 ohms and RK 42 is hard to make out but might be 1.9 and measured 4 ohms.

Ok I replaced the resistors with new ones from a list I found online. Now I get the red LED on the pwr supply board. 3 of the resistors I replaced were different values of the ones already there.... I am going to switch those 3 back to the originals and see if the red led goes out. I put the 2 1.8 ohm resistors in as you said... will have to see if it works once I get the pwr supply to fire up.

I got the tv on. red is still bent. Should I try a manual convergence? Is it even worth trying with the red out of whack?

  • djandrewsind Dec 15, 2009

red convergence output is red hot. Other one is cool. Red is bent big time. Anyway to post pics? I have no idea of the history of the tv. A lot of these resistors had long leads on the sold side of the board compared to the others. Perhaps they were replaced before.

  • djandrewsind Dec 15, 2009

Ok I think a new board is a good idea. At least I have new IC's for the future. Tell me ifhttp://www.encompassparts.com/products/?... looks like what I need.

    Thanks

  • djandrewsind Dec 15, 2009

That's the problem.. this service manual doesn't have a board number or component values. It has DP23k/32 stamped on it but I understand that is not the part number.

Oh well you helped all you could. Thanks

Hi,
It sounds few resistors are not good, devalued around convergence ICs and need to be replaced, specially near hotter IC.
Check near convergence out ICs for bigger resistors (1 watt) that surface color is faded or it looks burned/ cooked, replace them with same value/ ratings.
If you post model and brand of your TV that would help me to provide you more info.
Thanks.

    Thanks for model info.
Yes, 1 watt resistor usually gets defective and changes its value, take out resistors one by one and check its ohms with dvm or analog meter.
1/4 watt resistors usually do not get bad in convergence circuit because these just provide input signal, biasing etc.
Do you have service manual of TV?

OK, you can download service manual copy from HERE for small fee, this will make job easy because of part list, schematics etc.
    Thanks.

Also recheck soldering work of replaced convergence ICs pins, make sure there is no bridge soldering connection between pins on circuit board.

I would recommend 'Do Not Adjust' convergence geometric settings through service mode that is mentioned in service manual because these settings were fine before convergence ICs got bad and this problem does not affect on settings. Just find out bad resistors and cold solder joints in circuit board.

1.8 ohms would be correct value of both resistors as these are used shunt resistors to get error sample.
Service Manual Website offers service manuals and usually they provide complete manual.
    Thanks.

Well these resistor values like 1.8 ohms or 2.2 or 3.3 like that does not stop TV to turn On. Check connectors that might not be plugged correctly etc.
    Thanks.

How much is red bent? and hows red convergence out chip temp?
Are you sure convergence circuit was not tempered before?
    Thanks.

red convergence output is red hot. Other one is cool. Red is bent big
time. Anyway to post pics? I have no idea of the history of the tv. A

    ==================================================================

If red chip temp is high then its not good sign and shows trouble in chip biasing circuit or convegrence yoke coil is consuming much current and causing red IC temp high.
I recommend to find similar board from local tv repair shops either to replace it or confirm resistors value.
Red bent is result of all that mess with red convergence chip so please check it carefully, once convergence chip got correct drive and biasing, red bent on screen will also be corrected.

Well, if I had service manual of Hitachi 46F500, I would had been provided you board part number, where to buy etc info long ago.
Please check board part number in service manual, that you have and search it over internet for best price.
    Thanks.
