My Acer Aspire 3003 touchpad and keyboard started to lock up recently. I find that using it without the battery fitted avoids the problem. The battery wasn't holding much charge anyway.

You must need a bios update look for one through google when your machine is going good do it from that machine its a must. else you have to plug up cables to reflash it. The bios is that screen when it starts up and loads necessary drivers.

Locks up at the select user screen when booting up.

when did it stop working
look at your keyboard make sure it isnt locked or shutoff
usually needs fn key plus another key to turn it back on
or change anything. These keys would be located usually at the top of keyboard and there symbol will be the same colour as your fn key.
Did you upgrade your system
If you are still unable to get on I would do a recovery

Frozen keyboard

you possibly have a spyware infection, (like a virus)

if you reboot and have the same problems, then try booting into safe mode, if keyboard still locked up, try using an external keyboard (to test your system), if the external keybard works then it may just be that your keyboard is broken (and needs replacing)

How to change or open Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook's keyboard

Keyboard is easy - just turn computer over, unscrew the screws that connect the keyboard to the laptop and then see if there are any screws on the keyboard itself that must be unscrewed. Pry the keyboard off with a small flathead screwdriver, unplug the ribbon and replace with new keyboard by re connecting the ribbon and then snapping it into place and of course replacing whatever screws you took out. Hard drive - you must first locate whereever it is on the bottom of the notebook, unscrew those screws, take it out and reconnect new one. REMEMBER to take out battery during this whole procedure and put a cloth over the LCD screen so you wont scratch it up.
