Question about Vacuums

My 7 year old windtunnel smells like it is burning after 10 minutes of use. I have emptied the bag and made sure there is no hair along the brush roll. What should I do next?

Change the belt. It is probably stretched and worn. You can get a replacement belt here:

I dont think my vacuum has suction. and it smells like burnt rubber

HI, it's Jim from Crucial Vacuum!

If your vacuum is giving off any kind of burning smell unplug it immediately and check for the following problems.

  • Check your vacuums motor for any signs of smoke
  • Check your wall socket, and vacuum plug to see if there is any heat coming from either.

Your vacuums motor may be running hot for a number of reasons. Your vacuums filters may be blocked, or your vacuums bag/dust bin may be full. Be sure to empty the bag and clean/replace your filters.

Also, check your vacuums belt. Make sure the belt is still in position and is wrapped around the brush roll properly. The belt should have a good bit of tension around it. If the belt isn't on properly it may be getting jammed and causing friction, which would give off that burning smell.

Hair may be wrapped around your brush roll as well, which would also contribute to a foul smell coming from your vacuum once it's turned on. Clear out your brush roll with a razor, or a pair of scissors.

Brushes not rotating on kirby vacuum

Change the belt, they stretch after while. If it made a burnt rubber smell or it's > 1 year old this is probably your problem.

I have a Hoover WindTunnel with a bag that makes a burning smell. I cleaned the brush and the belt looks intact. It still smells really bad. Could it be as simple as needing a new belt?

Hi there,

yes it could be that simple. sometimes the belt will wear and stretch. Generally I advise my customers to replace the belt once per year, or as soon as something gets caught to stop the brush from turning.

Your belt number should be on the model/serial plate on the bottom of the unit there. 38528-###. I am guessing its a 38528-033 but could be 38528-040. Your model/serial plate will be more accurate.

Smells like burning rubber when I turn on my G6 Kirby vacuum.

You must take of the plastic ends from the wood beater bar and make sure the metal axels are not wound up with hair. I did this monthly with 4daughters

Every so often I get a smell of burning from my g4 Kirby vacuum. I noticed it's when I'm vacuuming a fairly new rug on this house I clean. Should I be concerned?

If it is a smell of burning rubber - most likely your vacuum belt is overdue for replacement.

At this point - remove the brush roller, remove the old belt, clean off your brush roller and remove any string or hair that may be bound up around it (usually around where the belt goes or on the sides), and put on a new belt. Your Kirby should act good as new if your bag is replaced at the same time.

If the brush roller has too much string and hair wrapped around it, many times the brush roller will not spin as fast as the belt is driving it and you will get that burning smell.

Hoover U5468-900 WindTunnel Supreme suction is suddenly poor

The other possibility is there is a blockage in the foot. these models have dual channel air flow (windtunnel) and become blocked when not cleaned depending on use. under the roller there is a cavity that can be removed for cleaning. a hot motor can be caused by poor air flow.

I have a kirby g4 vacuum that is 12 years old. it sounds like

About once a month as I have German Shep dogs and cuz of the hair I check all the hoses to make sure they are free of dust bunnies. I also take the bottom plate off the roller, turn the lever to losen the belt and take the roller off. Clean/cut all the strings, hair etc off the roller , check the belt for cracks and burns and replace if need be. Put the roller cover back on, and reconnect the belt.

Then on the side of the machine where the bag attaches, this also slides out to clean. Sometimes heavier items will get stuck in there so that dog hair and larger items cannot pass to the bag and it clogs. This will make your suction very low.

Also a good check inside the bag compartment and clean with the attachment hose if need be, helps a great deal with ordor and dust when turned on. Especially if you have dogs/dander and hair. Ive also put carpet fresh inside my bag to keep the doggy ordor down.

Self propel not working, burning smell

Flip the vacuum cleaner over and check the roller brush. Is it full of string and hair? If so, unscrew the four phillips-head screws holding the plate on that covers the roller brush; pull out the brush, and cut off/clean off all the hair and string. Replace everything and try running the vacuum. Alternate solution: perhaps the belt that makes the brush go around is broken. If so, follow the above steps to remove the roller brush, then replace the belt.
