Do the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Increase 'Brightness' & 'Contrast' controls
  • Perform monitor self-test feature check
  • Check for bent or broken pins on the D-sub cable.
In case the above does not work, do this:
- Do a factory reset on All Settings. http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/E173FP/En/controls.htm

If the above does not resolve the problem, change the video settings on the Operating system or on the graphics configuration settings. If your system is running on Windows, boot it to safe mode first.

E172FP (Black) 17 in. Flat Panel LCD Monitor: Dell monitor problem, its the power save mode agai...

First, try it on another PC, check or try another VGA cable, if it still does not work then you need to open it up. Dell monitors are known to have bad solder connections, bad caps. See my photo albums of failed Dell monitors to get some idea what to look for.
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed DELL monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

If your computer is indeed running, simply unplug your monitor from the wall, and then plug it back in. This will bring your monitor out of power save mode instantly.

Screen goes black while in use

If your monitor it's good the reason may be that the settings of the refresh rate is to high for your monitor. Try to enter in Safe Mode (Press F8 key before booting in OS and from the menu choose Safe Mode) and then from Control Panel try to remove de video driver and then restart the computer. After restart, the OS will detect your video card as standard VGA card. After that install your video driver again.

My monitor shuts down after one second.

Dell monitors automatically go into power-save mode after a preset amount of time when the computer is inactive. The Dell monitor will go completely black, instead of showing a screensaver. This doesn't mean that your Dell computermag-glass_10x10.gif has shut down. Instead, this allows your monitor to essentially turn off until it's needed again. You can change how long it is before the Dell monitor goes into power-save mode by changing your display settings.
  1. Step 1 Press any key on your keyboard or move your mouse. Either will turn off power-save mode. Alternately, you can press the power button on your Dell computer tower or laptop.
  2. Step 2 Press any key a second time if the monitor goes from power-save to stand-by mode. Stand-by mode allows the screensaver to appear.
  3. Step 3 Enter your user name and password into the login prompt if your computer requires a login. Press "Enter" to begin using your Dell computer.
  4. Step 4 Change the display settings on your Dell monitor to prevent your monitor from going into power-save mode prematurely. Right-click anywhere on your desktop and choose "Properties." Click the "Screensaver" tab and press "Power." Beside "Turn off Monitor," choose a time amount from the drop-down list and press "Apply."

My new Dell flat screen monitor is blank and posting a message - entering power save mode- ... when I restart it briefly displays the Dell logo and other normal display at normal startup then switches to...

You'll need to troubleshoot a little. SOmething may be broken, but you'll need to find out what. 1: Try the monitor on another computer, see wether it will work on that one. If it doesn't, the monitor's broken and you're probably going to need a new one. 2: If the monitor does work, put it back, but now use another cable to connect it to the PC. If that fixes it, your cable was broken. 3: If not, you could try to switch the graphics card in the PC with another one. Do not attempt that, however, unless you know what you're doing. If you don't, get someone you know to do it for you, or take it to a computer shop. If the PC will boot with another graphics card, the old one is broken. 4: If not, it may be your motherboard that's broken. Repeat step 3 with it. These steps should fix your problem. If not, please post back here. Regards, Yannick.

I only get power saving mode on my screen then screen goes black

inside the power pack is a pulse IC chip they fail and cause all kinds of havoc also caps can cause issues unaccounted for, I would start at replacement of the IC about 2 dollars on E bay, and replace any bad capacitors you can see, they look domed or are leaking color from the top creases. after that get back with me and we can either proceed or you can rate me fixya, have a great weekend
