Question about John Deere Garden

Open Question

John Deere GT225 hard starting

GT225 has gotten progressively hard to start. Must prewarm the engine with a heater and even with that takes 3-5 minutes of constant cranking before it starts. This is 15hp Kohler ~ 5yrs old. Getting fuel, spark plug appears fine and since it does run must be getting spark. Does this tractor have ignition points? Where should I start looking?

SOURCE: john deere 420 trouble starting getting gas and

The engine needs air, so be sure the air filter is clean. If it is not, replace it.

The engine needs spark. Replace the spark plug and be sure that the battery has a complete charge.

The engine needs good fuel so be sure the gas is newly purchased, not gas that has been sitting around for months.

SOURCE: I have a lx 255 john deere wont start

You have a defective ignation coil. When the engine gets hot, the winding in the coil opens and the engine stops. After it cools down, it will again make contact and start again. If you don't know where the coil is, follow the wire from the spark plug. The spark plug wire is attached to the coil from the factory. It's easy to replace with a 1/4 inch socket set. Set the magnet to coil gap with a standard business card.

SOURCE: I have a John deere 317 tractor that does not start.

We will be testing for voltage to the points, coil, engine to tractor wiring harness, ignition switch

Tools needed:
volt meter to read 12 volts, or test light

1) with the points open: is there voltage at the connection wire at the points
If yes; adjust points to .020" and try to crank engine and check for spark
*** you may want to determine if condensor is connected to this wire also
if no
2) check point side (neg or - ) of coil for voltage
if yes, engine should start
if no
3) check for voltage at the + side of coil
If yes, coil is bad
if no
4) check wire connector from engine to frame wiring harness
if yes; engine should start

if no
5) check wiring on the back of ignition switch
if yes; engine should start

if no
6) check that ignition switch RED or BATTERY supply wire has voltage
if yes; switch is bad

if no
7) check supply wire and circuit breaker connected to the battery side of the solenoid
if yes; engine should start

if no; circuit breaker could be at fault or wire connector at battery supply

SOURCE: John Deere 445 Garden Tractor, starts immediately,

could be bad gas, but it sounds like a choke problem. did it sit over the winter with less than a half tank of gas in it. try putting some rubbing alcohol in the fuel or draining the tank and disconnecting the gas line so you can drain the gas out of the carb. also check the gap of the spark plug and make sure that is correct. when was the last time there was fresh oil put in. also check the air filter, it could be full of dirt.

I have a John Deere Gator 825i that that starts hard and once it does start it smokes for a few seconds then it runs clear after that. The engine does not use any significant amount of oil either.

They have a throttle body fuel injected engine. If its hard starting then smokes usually that indicates pour fuel quality or something wrong with fuel system.

How do I change the spark plugs in a John Deere CR125 mower?

The best way to test for spark is to take off the wire to the spark plug, put the metal end of a screwdriver into the socket, hold the metal of the screwdriver about 1/8 inch or 3 mm away from a metal part of the engine, and crank the engine.

If you don't see a spark in the gap, the problem is in the ignition system, not the spark plug.

If you do see a spark in the gap, take the spark plug out, reattach the wire, touch the spark plug to the engine, crank it again to see if there's a spark in the spark plug. That will tell you if the spark plug is faulty.

Cant drain trans oil, gt225

That trans should take 4.2 quarts of John Deere lo-visc hygaurd. With both plugs removed from bottom of trans as well as the bigger black plug on the front side of trans,it should fully drain in about 5 minutes.Dont forget to unscrew the black fill plug from top/left side of trans so it can vent.Your book may say not to remove it but it's a misprint. When you go to fill trans dont install fill plug until oil is at top of threads, then install plug/cap.Continue to fill trans through white plastic tank until its level with lines.

Battery lite glows when pto is engaged after running for 5min

The charging circuits used on smaller tractors are generally barely adequate for the load presented to them, so it is important that the tractor engine is running fast enough especially when using PTO power. If your tractor has a tachometer on it, JD has an indication of the motor speed you should use when using the PTO. If not, it is generally pretty close to max. It should sound like it is running smoothly although fast, and not with whining or rough sounds from the engine.
