Question about Sony DRU 530A DVD±RW Burner

1 Answer

CD R/RW and DVD R/RW won't burn

Something I installed or did has turned both my CD and DVD burners into Read only Rom drives. I have been using them both succesfully for over three years,so I must have done something to turn off the burn function.

I uninstalled Nero, hoping that was it, but it did not solve the problem.

Any suggestions

The restore function does not go back far enough. I reinstalled Windows and SP2 trying to solve the problem on Nov 25 and that's as far back as the restore calendar goes. The problem was happening before that and the reinstallations did not cure it. If it were just one drive I would replace it, but both of them turning into read only at the same time argues for something I did not hardware problems.

I also noticed that there is no longer an option to enable the drives to record under properties as there had been before when I first started trying to solve the problem. Even when they exisited the drives were not recording. I suspect they went away when I reinstalled Windows XP home.

UPDATE: I changed the Registy using instructions from Microsoft. Now the Drives identify themselves correctly, but the IMAPI service keeps switching to stopped by itself and the record tab on the properties for the drives does not want to stay record enabled.

Update 2: The bios/CMOS re-boot did not do it. The system seems to know the disc burners are there, but they still do not recongnize that there is a disk in them. I had already reinstalled windows and SP2 before I pulled the battery on the mother board. Do I have to do it again or should I move on to checking the hardware and cables?

Ok lets try a system restore to see if it was indeed something you did..

click start, all programs, axcessoires, system tools , system restore.. Now follow the onscreen instructions and restore your computer to a previous date, one in which the burners wrorked..

CLICK START, Accessories , System tools , System Restore
Follor thw on screen instructions and and restore your computer to a previous date, one in which they did work.

Let me know how that goes.

Ok it seems we have a corruption here.. i will need you to fullow these steps exaclty..

    1.) unplug your system

    2.) open it up

3.) on the mainboard is a battery, remove it

4.) hit the power button 7 times(just to clear any remaing

5.) put the battery back in and mount up the system

6.) when you turn it on, it will stall, enter the bios and loat the default settings(optimised prefered)

7.) boot the system and se if anything changes in your current windows instillation. YOu do this by right clicking on mycomputerm clicking properties, hardware, device manager. Right click on any device in the left window and select scan for hardware changes ,, see if it reads the burners..

8.) if that fails, completely format and reinstall windows, followed by your main board drivers and then software..

    If the above fails,
try replacing the cable connecting the drives to the main board

try a different burner known to be working from a different system..

If it still fails, try your burners in a diffrent system

If it works m your mainboard ide controller is defective and will require you to replace the entire mainboard

Ok YOu did a full format when installing windows right ??

If so move along to hardware and cables,, Try the burners in another system first.

Ok i asked before if my drive will burn both dvd and cd. the answer was yes. but when i installed the drive and ran my dvd creator program. it said this drive is dvd read only.

Hi mikey7420 ,

The drive name itself is the clue to know whether it can burn dvds or not.

  • In your case it's a CD-RW (read and write or rewritable) and DVD-ROM (Read only memory and not read and write or rewritable as in the case of CD)
  • Perhaps the one who told you did not understand your question properly , and understood it , in the sense that it can read CDs as well as DVDs , as far as Dvd-ROM drives are concerned many shopkeepers who are especially new working in the shop just make a guess and answer our question which could lead to this misunderstanding or incorrect information being passed on.
  • So the next time you buy a DVD drive which should have a read and write functionality as well , then look up for a CD_RW,DVD-RW drive.
  • Also remember that DVD-RW drive can by default read and write CDs as well , but it's not true for CD drives..
  • So usually a DVD-RW drive can read and write Cds as well as DVDs but a CD-RW drive can either read or read and write a DVD depending on whether it's a DVD-ROM or DVD-RW.
Hope this helps.

My dvd rom not read any dvd

You dont need any software to "Read" a cd/dvd. The drivers needed are automatically loaded when you install the drive.
If you need software to make "Burn" discs, there are a few good free programs.
I use CD BurnerXP.
Imageburn "IMGBURN"

just google free burning software for others

I can burn cd's but not dvd's

Hello Rfd832,
What I see from the description is that the drive is a combo drive. Combo drives are CD-RW and DVD-ROM drives means
CD-RW = Compact Disk-Read Write
DVD-ROM = Digital Versatile Disk - Read Only Memory
so these drives can read and write CDs but can only read DVDs (Cannot write or burn DVDs)
If you want to be able to burn DVDs then you need to have DVD RW drive (either DVD+RW or DVD-RW)

You said that you are able to burn DVDs on other computer so please check the label on the DVD drive.. it should be DVD-RW/DVD+RW drive

Hope that helps.. :)

Thanks and Regards,

Unable to burn dvd using LG DVD ROM

your DVD Rom drive cannot burn DVDs because it is not a DVD burner, DVD Rom drives are different from DVD writers, if you want to burn DVD you must buy a DVD burner/writer.

My dvdrom drive wont let me access the drive

ITs a dvd rom drive. It will not burn blank dvds
in order to burn, it has to cd-r/cd-rw/dvd-r/dvd-rw. If a drive cannot write to a blank disc, it will eject it. Rom drives read only (Read Only Memory), Combo drives- burn cd's only read dvd's, and super drives both read and write to cds and dvds.
