I should have said that the RC 256 has a 44 wire feeder spec 5260V, and that the feed motor is what stops or sometimes won't start.

    I have a HOBART RC256 welder with a "44" wire feed spec 5260V-1
This wire feed sometimes runs for short time, other times the drive motor will not run at all. Can anybody help or have a repair manual please.

A resistor was opening on the motor control board.

I have a hobart Handler 135 and it won't feed the wire correctly. At first it will feed about 6 " of wire then it goes down to about an inch at a time then it will just click. If you wait awhile it will...

If you completely remove wire from unit does it still slowdown and stop when you pull trigger?
If yes, then 2 most common problems are
A. Thermistor @ position PTC1 on circuit board
B. Drive Roller Motor

To diagnose, locate thermistor @ position PTC1 in upper middle part of circuit board.
It's yellowish round and about 1/2" in diameter.
Jumper Accross the 2 leads, use a small insulated screwdriver or meter probe.

1. Pull trigger on gun, when motor slows or stops then jumper the leads, if it speeds back up then it's the Thermistor
Replace with a Raychem RXE 1.85A @ 72 v
Or comparable, try EBay

2. If no change, isolate motor by removing the 2 leads and connect a 9-12 volt DC battery source, does motor spin? If not then motor is problem. If motor spins and is constant then additional troubleshooting needed, next possible issues are bad resistor or scr

Hobart handler 140 mig welder gas wont shut off

Looking at the Hobart manuals, that is how they set them up at the factory.

One way to make a change to that is to wire in a solid state relay or solid state Triac and pick up an energizing voltage off of location RC2-1 or RC2-2 on the control board when the trigger is pressed, or as an alternate location from the feed motor through a resistor and rectifier. Once you know if the voltage goes low, or voltage goes high at your point of signal, you pick the contact you want on the relay so when the wire is feeding out, the gas is flowing. and when it is not feeding wire out, the gas is shut off.

Hobart handler 135, the wire starts to feed for about 15 seconds then slows and stops.

Don't know how old is your unit but my guess is that your gun's liner is the problem. Have you change it lately? If not, change it. Does your machine just stops feeding the wire or does it shuts down? If it just stop then; is the liner, if it shuts down; then you have a pc board problem.

Need replacement diodes for Hobart model # RC-256 input volts230/460 3 negative 3 positive total of 6 per welder.

Are there any numbers on the diodes. If so, do a web search to find cross reference and supplier. You can use any brand diode if it matches current and reverse voltage specs.

Hobart handler 135 wire feeds for about a two feet then stops feed motor runs well under no load

This happens to me all the time. Wear and tear has taken its toll and everything has to be maintained for it to work. Most likely the welding tip is worn and should be replaced. Lincoln electric tips work well and I will replace mine several times during the day. Also check your tension and make sure the wire will uncoil freely from the spool. You can remove the tip and make sure the wire will feed without it. If not, your liner may be worn out. Also a welding Jell will help keep the tip from cloging. It will still happen, but hopefully not on your first weld of the day.

Installed new spool wire tangled in wire feed compartment and stopped. Now wire feeder doesn't feed.

If the feed wheel mechanism does not move, check for voltage at the motor. If there is none present, you need to look for a failure on the control board, which may be a fuse, or even one of the SCR's. Often an 8 amp 200 volt type.

I have a 135 hobart and the wire feed only works for a short time then it stops

Lots of MIG/MAG units have a Stich and spot facility, these are indicated by Stitch -------- and spot by .......with a timer control numbered 1-10sec make sure that both are switch to off, anti clockwise, These switches are a bit fragile so be a little carefull with them.
Lets know how you get on,,

Hobart handler 140 will not feed wire

A schematic would certainly help, give Hobart a call and ask for a wiring diagram. or manual. Hobart are very helpful and may even give you guidance, you may have to pay the postage, they usually fax these documents so it will not cost you anything.
