I have a 1996 yukon 5.7 litre, whenever I put it in 4 wheel drive I smell a strong oil smell, it is comming from a small hose right of the radiator(drivers side), the hose has a release valve on it. Does anyone know where the hose goes?Or what it is for? Can not follow it.

Hi Chris, I believe that is your engine oil cooler line that runs from the engine to the radiator, which includes, (in some models) an integrated oil cooler and transmission cooler.

Those lines typicaly need to be replaced after 10 years, as they start to break down and "weep" oil through them. You'll want to check them ASAP, as having them fail will cause more trouble if it happens on the road, that getting them replaced now.

You can do this yourself, if you've got the time, tools, and ability, but it isn't all that expensive to have it done for you either. You can typically get the hoses at most auto parts stores, although some will have to order them in.

The smell is just a coincidence, as the engine works harder when in 4 wheel mode, so likely the hotter oil from the engine is weeping out of the degraded hoses as the SUV warms up, etc. Mine did this on my Suburban a few years back and after changing the oil cooler lines, it was like new again.

Hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!

Chris, if the line appears to be OK, then check the fitting to make sure it is snug, as that might stop the leaking. It's possible that the fitting wasn't properly tightened when it was installed. I'm pretty sure it's been replaced at some point, as these lines won't last much past 9-10 years.

Check the fitting and see if it's snug and that might resolve the leaking issues. If not, remove the fitting and verify that it wasn't cross-threaded when it was installed.

Engine Oil how many Litres & Automatic Transmission Oil how many litres....? Which Oil grades to be used...?

not knowing what it is you drive and the engine, most motors hold 4 to 5 litres of oil with a new oil filter. not knowing what your car is and the year the grade of oil can be 5w30 or 10w30, check with what the manufacture requires. you have the same problem with the transmission question. most hold 5 to 7 litres of trans oil, depending on the transmission, and the oil depends on what make of car you drive as GM vehicles use a different type than say a Ford of Chrysler and even different again with the imports.

3.2 L 6VD1 DOHC V6
3.5 L 6VE1 DOHC V6
3.0 L 4JX1 TD I4
3.1 L 4JG2 TD I4

floods, wot cranking cuts fuel and starts any flooded engine,
it's overheating that wins the First order failures rule sets.
nothing else matters. cure that first.! find cause! first.

sounds (im deaf there, lol) that smoke is out tail pipe end and dissipates fast and is not smoke but steam, , oil smoke smells like burning oil and lingers. steam smells sweet like burning Antifreeze.
AF steam is a blown head gasket or far worse.
do a compression test first to see if it's even worth fixing????
most are NOT. (unless free labor, sure)

first learn steam from smoke
serious , watch moms tea pot. see that steam goes away fast.and very uniquely , now watch burning oil.
remove dip stick, drop the drip of oil on hot exhaust manifold.
smell that, that is oil burning, and lingers.
this will last you a life time of blown engines..... just one look and bingo. (my instructor in 1965 did in front of class)

got oil in the AF/ CARBON chunks in same.
water in oil, ? pan, engine . milky oil.
rad leak down test fail? can be lots of reasons even a cracked block.or head. not just gaskets.

Leaking oil and smoking from rear axle.

it seems that your axle shafts and such were just changed and the surfaces were never looked at that ate up those seals in the first place.. the brakes are adjusted too tight and this is also causing heat to buld up in the wheels..this can also burn out the seals and cause failure..gotta take it all apart again and check the bearing seal surfaces for any burrs or reasons for these seals to get cut up.. also when reinstalling these put some gear oil on the seal surfaces so they arent dry-ran on the shafts..this will destroy them also.. clean off the oil on the brake surfaces wit carb cleaner so it will evaporate quickly then reassemble..wheels shouild spin freely with little drag on them while turning by hand..

What cause oil burning smells after 4, 5 minutes driving 2001 VW Passat?

You may have a leaking valve cover gasket and oil is making it's way down to the exhaust or something else that gets very hot. Check your cylinder head for excessive oil dripping down off of the base of the valve cover. Check your power steering pump and hoses for leaks. After you get to where you're driving, look under the car and see where the oil spots are, if there are any. If it's dark or black in color, it's engine oil. If it's more like a red-ish color, it's transmission fluid. See where the oil spot is on the ground and check the engine and see about where it could be leaking.

My car burns oil and gives a smell off whenever i drive it long enough for it to warm up i had to change the oil because the level was really low so i put high mileage oil. it has 80000 miles on it. i put...

It sounds like oil is getting past the rings. you can check the compression on each cylinder to see what one it is, or pull the spark plugs out and check each one you should be able to tell if oil is getting in the combustion chamber. If it is just the rings it wont be cheap to fix but the sooner the better.

Motor is burning oill

answer 1-Sorry but this could be horrible news engine wise, one of your piston rings might be broken.Probably the bottom one that scrapes oil back down as the piston goes to bottom dead center.
To fix would mean an engine rebuild. You said "burning" other wise your using to thin of an oil.

Answer 2-Your car may have a short somewhere, like mine did. My car wouldn't start in 4th but while driving i would lose a bit of power and i would be stuck in 4th till i turned it off for a while.

hope this helps

FRONT TIRES AND ENGINE.

Hi,

The tire noise will be due to the car needing a wheel alignment, just take it down to your local tyre dealer and they will check it for you if you are not sure.

As for the burning smell, if it's coming from the engine it could be a simple oil leak leaking onto the exhaust or could be more serious like worn rings or valve guides.

Good luck.
