Question about Ariens Garden

I recently replaced a carb kit on my ariens model#938010 ss322 and it will not keep running,it does not have a diaphram.any suggestions?

I have a ariens ezr 1742. my prob is when i'm mowing the engine starts to pop and sputter with a little smoke. but if i pinch off the fuel line it stops and runs norm. till the carb runs out of fuel. if i un-pinch the hose it runs fine for about 30 seconds and starts popping and sputtering again. i can pinch the hose for 10 seconds and it runs fine till i un-pinch and 10 sec. later it pops and sptrs again

We're talking about a briggs or kohler motor with a bowl type carb- correct? Im assuming you are sure you are dealing with a fuel issue.

To what extent did you rebuild the carb? Did you replace the needle? Make sure all passages are clear? check the float level? Check the setting of the idle air screw ( if present)?

Did you check the quality of fuel coming out of the fuel line and did it have good flow? Its easy to have water in your fuel system and inadvertantly fill your clean rebuilt carb up with water/ bad fuel.

In short, once you've narrowed it down to a fuel issue, youve either missed something in the carb and will need to go through it again or there is bad fuel in your system or the fuel is not reaching the carb.

I have a husqvarna128 weedeater already cleaned the carb not the prob it will only stay running if the choke is halfway and you pump the throttle any suggestions?


Its definitely the carb. "cleaning" the carb usually is not a fix alone on those 2 cycle carbs. You should rebuild and clean it. The small diaphrams in those get tiny holes, and the fuel now days plays havoc on them.
Carb kits are inexpensive, just make sure you re-assemble everything in correct order.

There is plenty of things you may have done wrong to cause this, is it the correct kit? i only ask because it is a compensated carb and many after market kits have a very important hole in the metering diaphram missing, it is also important to have the correct high on the metering lever, this should be level with the sides of the carb, bend the lever up or down to get the correct hight, also make sure the gasket goes onto the carb first before the metering diaphram as this acts as a spacer, if the seat in the carb is worn it cannot be replaced so that would mean a replacement carb.

does it have fresh gas in it, If so time to rebuild the carb, even though you blew through all holes there is a diaphram inside the carb that pumps gas to it, so I suggest you take the carb apart and clean inside out and replace the diaphram, the way you describe it only runs on primer, tells me the carb is not getting fuel. My rancher was running then quit. Spark is good but plug is dry. I ripped off the carb and cleaned it but it will only run when i dump fuel in it.


Hello, I will try to give you a few ideas and hope one works. Fuel is not getting into the combustion chamber at all from what you are explaining. Is the fuel filter ok? Did you put a new kit in it specially the diaphrams? From what you describe, obviously gas is not getting to the carb. and therefore into the engine. If the bolts are all tightened properly, the gaskets or anything else is not leaking air. There is a small screen type filter in the carb that if plugged could cause that problem. The hole it is in is about 1/4 inch across maybe a little more. remove it with a needle and clean it or replace it with a new one. Actually if you installed the old carb kit back in, I suggest installing a new one. I would check the inlet needle to make sure it is not sticking, also the lever and make sure the small spring under the lever is not missing. The metering diaphram should not be stiff or have any pinholes in it. All the gaskets on the carb should not be leaking, and make sure the pulse port on the carb and the one on the intake manifold should not be blocked also the gasket between the carb and intake manifold should be plugged. That is about all the suggestions I can provide. I hope one of them might be helpful. All the best and good luck.

Runs on starting fluid, not fuel. cleaned carb with carb cleaner(aerosol) ,still won't run. Primer (purge) bulb doesn't work properly. Spark plug dry, fuel lines clean. Diaphram problem or something...


Try spraying a little gas where you spray starter fluid. If it runs you may have to install diaphram kit. If it has a choke can get around primer not working.

Redmax blower older model does not start, tried a few drops of gas in spark plug port and it started. but stalls after fuel in burned off, any help would be appreciated, djk913


Carb. problems sounds mostly like the carb needs to be thoroughly cleaned out, drop fuel bowl and hit openings with a tiny steel wire and carb cleaner also check the diaphram, sounds like its cracked/dried up.

How do I set fuel screws on carb of saw 55 model chainsaw starting is difficult, will not run, cuts off whenn it does start. suspect carb settings altered.


A better suspect is the fuel pump. It is a diaphram in the carb that converts the vacuum pulses into pumping the fuel. This is a common problem when saws are a few years old.

Get a carb rebuild kit complete with the little flapper check valves. The fuel, especially with the alcohol added destroy these diaphrams after fuel sits in them a while.

I neglected to run my Ariens 5524 snowbower dry last spring.


No, just spraying gumout in the carb will not likely help. You will need to remove the carb, disassemble it and clean it. I suggest replacing the needle, bowl gasket and bowl nut gasket. Be sure you have cleared all passages in the carb.

You'll need the model and serial number and also the carb will be helpful, if you take that info and the carb to your local lawnmower shop they will be able to supply you with the right kit.

Auger stalls won't keep running


The diaphram is 2 piece's (1 is gasket the other is the dia.) my suggestion would be to bring it to a repair shop and have the carb rebuilt so that everything can be properly set. Besides the jets needing to be set, the needle may need to be reset also. If the dia. was alittle stiff than its going to need a new kit in it. 2 cycle carbs are alittle more finiky than 4 cycle carbs.
