Keypad stops working on handsets

After a few years the keypads stop working. Usually starts at the top of the keypad where the on and off button are. Nothing more frustrating than not being able to answer the phone. You can use the handsfree button to answer as a speakerphone but then you can't hang up. Tried taking the phone apart because it is out of warranty. two screws under battery. But it still wouldn't come apart. Thought I might be able to clean something or straighten the rubber buttons out so that the buttons would start working again but it won't even come apart. If anyone knows how to take it apart that would be a start.

Actually there were only a few clips inside and I didn't break any but it did take some prying power. Then there were five tiny screws holding the circuit board to the front of the phone that had to be removed. Watch out for the antenna when you separate these two parts. And watch for the two speaker wires which must stay connected. Clean both the rubber pad on both sides and the circuit board with qtips and nail polish remover to remove gummy/greasy substance. Do it till the qtips come off clean. Thoroughtly let dry before putting back together.

I have had the same difficulty with my vtech keypad. despite being a klutz, I used the "Best Solution", unscrewed the screws as described, cleaned both pads with an alcohol wipe and it worked perfectly. THANKS!!

I have had the same problem now on 2 sets of VTECH phones. I was able to get it apart and I did clean off the gummy substance...one one handset it improved some keys but the ON key still seems to be worn out. On the second handset it didn't work nearly as well, and interestingly this handset had LESS of the gummy stuff to begin with. I have one more handset to go.

Overall, I've never had this kind of a problem with a phone before, and as I said, THIS set is a replacement I had to buy from VTECH after the LAST set went bad in similar fashion. MY CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN SHEER HORROR WITH THEM. I know that's not a "fix it" comment, but if I had the choice I'd never buy another VTECH product due to both the lousy equipment and the terribly POOR customer service.

Thanks at least to this forum for suggesting a possible solution....it is FAR more than VTECH ever did.

After you remove the battery and the two obvious underlying screws, you will need to pop the two halves apart. This takes some force and you may break some internal plastic clips, but you have no choice. There are approximately six internal plastic clips, so don't worry about breaking one or two. The screws hold it together securely anyhow. Then there are 5 more little screws to get the back PCB off. Then use nail polish cleaner and q-tips and clean the contacts on both the rubber pad and the PCB.

The keypad will work like new again - magic.

Don't know about the "like magic" part... I did as instructed and now none of the number keys or the handsfree/intercom keys work - on/off and menu keys work perfectly now, though... Any suggestions? Thanks!

Wifi stopped working, it says that no wifi card installed.. It stopped working all of a sudden

check to be sure you don't have a switch on the front, sides or top that shuts off the wireless card. Or look for the wireless symbol on the top of your keypad and click it. If that doen't work then hold the FN button usually found near the bottom right corner of the keypad, then while holding that button click on the wireless keypad and it should come back on. If you don't have an actual switch to turn on and none of the procedures I mentioned works then the wireless card is damaged and you'll have to have it replaced or use a wireless usb nic card. Good luck

The oven (10+ years old GE True Temp double wall oven) beeps and displays an F7 error message. We can temporarily stop it by pushing the Clear button, but it starts again in a few seconds. We don't know...

I'm a GE tech, the F7 means there is either a stuck button on the keypad or relay on the board behind the keypad. Shut off the breaker. Remove the 3 screws under the keypad and lift the panel a bit to remove it. Lay it face down on the top rack and disconnect the ribbon cable. Turn power back on and if f7 goes away the problem is in the keypad. If f76 returns it's in the control. We typically replace both together because usually if you replace 1 it will come back later then be the other part.

The down button the numbers 2, 3 and end call button have stopped working. when i press one of these buttons its shutting the phone down-any ideas or advice please?

Hi, it's the keypad IC or the keypad itself. So you can check the keypad if there is dirts that is stopping the keypad from working. Or the keypad needs to be replaced.

After checking the keypad if the keypad still did not solve the problem,
You will have to replace the keypad IC inside the board of the phone.

Take care. .

You need to reprogram the keypad. Press and release the learn button on the back of the motor. Within 20 seconds, press your four digit code into the keypad and press and hold the enter button until the lightbulb on the motor blinks once. You are finished.

Wharfedale DECT TAM telephone/answer machine is flashing CL on the main answer machine base unit. This message is not indicated in the user manual can you please advise? Many Thanks Steven Clifford

This is due to the base unit losing power and needs the clock resetting.
The handsets retain their clocks under battery power so this is a little misleading.

To reset the base unit clock:
- press the OK key
- press the 'down' arrow twice until "DATE/TIME" is displayed.
- press the OK key again, this will display the year. Enter the correct year on the handset numeric keypad and then press OK. (Only the last two digits of the year need to be entered).
- The date is then displayed in MM/YY format, enter the correct date on the handset numeric keypad and then press OK.
- The time is then displayed, enter rhe correct time on the handset numeric keypad and press OK.
- The handset then beeps and displays "SAVED".
- Press the "C" button and replace the handset on the base unit.

The base unit should now stop flashing "CL".

The Keypad stopped working

I suspect you atually have a bad keypad, but apparently GE decided to send you some free gifts? Wow. Sell them on eBay if they're not needed. *grin*

Replacing the keypad is usually a pretty easy job for a DIYer.

In many cases, it may be caused by steam or grease, but it may also just be a failure over time. I always recommend that you use the vent fan whenever you're cooking on the stove top. That helps keep steam, grease and heat away from the microwave controls.

We have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site. You'll find a link to our site in our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

There should also be a very helpful "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel. It's very helpful when troubleshooting. You can use it for testing your keypad.

If you need further assistance, please feel free to contact me directly through the links at our site: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk
