Question about Dell Dimension C521 PC Desktop

1 Answer

My c521 powers up and shuts down immediately after. You get about 3 seconds of activity from the fan and LEDs. Nothing appears on the screen.

Sounds like a power supply is gone bad. if you can replace it and usually it is simple u can get them cheap on tiger direct. some stores sell pwr supply testers so can try that too.

Hp P6000 fans stop after 15 seconds. Hard drive light stays on. nothing on monitor

dead PC, DESKTOP PC ,as old as 2009.
the fans tells you the PSU shut off, for cause.
fans, so you saw all fans turn off or just 1. or 2 of 3.
my pc has 4 fans many have 3;
CPU fan stops ,cpu overheats , PC goes slow or dead. clean the lint off it.
GPU fan , video goes dead. if it overheats.
PSU fan is inside the PSU if it goes bad, PSU is bad.
no monitor stated, is it CRT or LCD is it 15 years old.
if the monitor is 2002 or newer the OSD screen works
even with PC turned off, press the select button see that OSD screen ? telling you the monitor is not dead in 1second flat;
i caN NOT understand why the HDD lamp glows,
if the PSU shuts off , most LEDs go dead, on my PC
the standby LED on the MOBO glows, unless you pull the PSU power cord.
your HP PC came with 9 different mobo, during its production run.
at least. so answers come harder from that reason.

here are some simple tests.
test 1
power on, hear fans run
does the DVD drive (or cd) button eject work,.?
do all fans not just 1 or 2 worK? look for all fans clean the lent out
or things will overheat,
PSU can be bench tested or in the PC case.
using a jumper wire, even the HP service manual covers that.

power on the PC (after keeping monitor on for 5 full minutes)
test 2
the Screen must say, "hit ESC key to enter HP setup" BIOS.
press the ESC key on the monitor
if no text shows up that is a dead PC< "text above missing{"
if the PC told you to hit another key do so.
The ESC key , activates the BIOS brain. this cause
all those pages to work as seen in your service manual;.
if BIOS is dead that is a bad PSU (monitor ok)
or CPU is overheated.
bad ram, take all sticks out and test 1 by 1, ask how. !
The PSU will shut down on up to 12 or more faults
but never shuts down the standby power bus. unless AC line pulled.
IF the PSU has fan as most do this is the first place I look.

Gateway laptop i push power button it wont boot up but leds in front flash 4 times

Try holding down the power button instead of just pushing it. I had this problem with my HP dv7 and holding the power button down for around 5 seconds worked for me. Also make sure that its plugged in to a power source.

Freezes during start up

My first plan of attack would check
Second the event log in the BIOS, looking for a heat event. Make sure your fans are spinning, while you are in there get a can of compressed air and blow out any and all dust. Sometime it becomes necessary to remove the processor and put a little Artic 5 between the cpu and the heat sync.I would check out the video card, the easiest thing to try first is to remove and update the video drivers. I still lean towards the heat event Idea...
Hope this give you a headstart in the correct direction. Good luck,
PS, if you are the one shutting it down and rebooting, look to the Video Card,

TV PIcture and Sound Shut Down

it would appear its shutting down in a protect mode
its possible its a convergence circuit problem or something on the deflection bd
but it most likley will require some assistance from a tech that is used to working on this type of set
if you noticed when it does come on that the colors are all off line then suspect convergence circuit trouble the the green leds tell you what source is still alive there is a chart in the cabinet that will correspond with each source voltage that can lead you to tracking it down if you know what to look for and have the tools to do so

Gateway 400SD4 won't power up

replace the battery or have it tested. If these batteries don't have a minimum charge the machine will not boot into windows & will just shut down. You might try checking the battery condition with the "battery conditioner" in the bios

Problem with Dell Inspiron 1100 series laptop

Most certainly a non working fan would cause this behavior. Laptops are much more susceptible to overheating. Fan failures can be hastened by regularly blocking the fan by doing things like using it on a pillow or soft surface. The behavior is exactly what you think.
