On the breakers there is tow wires a red and a black and on the breaker there is one post that has the voltage on a sticker and one that dosent what wire goes to the side with the voltage sticker red or black

It should not matter. they are each going to carry line voltage

Troubleshooting Ground Fault

Troubleshooting a ground fault circuit interrupt, or GFI, breaker is pretty straightforward. Troubleshooting the circuit itself can be quite time-consuming.
The GFI breaker is designed with a test button incorporated into the breaker itself.
Pushing the test button should trip the breaker.
On GFI-style breakers the neutral wire going into the house's outlets is connected to the breaker's neutral connector, the white neutral that comes out of the breaker is connected to the neutral bus in the panel, isolating the neutral bus from the neutral wire going into the house.
The test button actually shorts the neutral wire feeding the circuit to the neutral bus in the electrical panel creating a ground fault that should trip the breaker.
It is considered a ground fault because the neutral bus in the main electrical panel is actually connected to the ground bus through the panel's metal casing. What to do if the test button isn't tripping the breaker

Push the test button on the GFI breaker.
The breaker should trip.
If the breaker does not trip, then it may be that the breaker has already tripped and just looks like it's on.
The position of the switch may only move slightly from the on position towards the off position when tripped.

Push the switch on the GFI breaker all of the way toward the off position.
It may take some force to get the breaker to reset.
Turn the breaker back to the on position.
When the breaker has been reset properly you should feel some resistance when pushing the switch back on.



3 Push the test button again and the breaker should trip.
If the breaker still doesn't trip then you should test for power at the screw connections inside of the electrical panel.
Remove the screw that holds the dead front covering the breaker's connections.
Remove the dead front cover.

Test for power with your voltmeter set on AC volts on the highest scale.
For a single pole GFI breaker, touch the black lead from the tester to the silver screw on the GFI breaker and touch the red lead from the tester to the brass screw on the GFI breaker.
You should see 110 volts on the tester. If voltage is seen but the test button won't trip the breaker, then the breaker is bad and should be replaced.

Test for power on a two pole breaker by touching the red voltmeter lead to one of screws with a black or red wire connected to it.
Touch the black lead to the other screw with a black or red wire connected to it.
You should read 220 volts or close to it on your voltmeter.
If you read voltage and the test button won't trip, the breaker is bad and needs to be replaced.

What to do if the breaker won't reset and keeps tripping when turned on

Unplug everything that is plugged into any of the outlets on the circuit in question.
Try resetting the breaker again by pushing the switch all the way to the off position and then turning it back to the on position.
If it won't reset and trips when the breaker's switch hits the on position, it could be a bad breaker or a problem in the circuit itself.

Use your straight-tipped screwdriver to loosen the brass connection screw or screws on the GFI breaker.
Pull the black hot wire, or wires, out of the breaker's connectors.
Loosen the silver screw the white wire is connected to and remove it from the GFI breaker.

Push the switch all the way to the off position.
Turn the switch back to the on position.
If the breaker still won't reset, then the problem is the breaker itself and it should be replaced with a new one of the same size, brand and model.
If the breaker resets normally and the test button trips the breaker when pushed, the problem is in the circuit itself and an electrician should be called to find your ground fault.

Reconnect the black wire, or wires, to the brass screws on the GFI breaker.
Reconnect the white wire to the silver screw on the GFI breaker.

Replace the dead front cover into the breaker panel.
Install the screw or screws that hold the dead front in place.

Is the breaker across both phases inside the panel? Turn the breaker on and measure the voltage between the black and red wires. If you read 0 across, but read 120V to ground on both wires you're only getting one phase. In your breaker panel there's a plastic piece going back and forth down the back, which seperates the phases. Make sure the breaker for your water heater is installed with one pole (side) on either side of the divider. Good luck!

What configuration do the output power wires look like. Do I connect to 3 and 4 , slots etc. What is meant by "load" in the instructions?


1) You posted under ET104C DPST (double pole single throw) 24-hour 4-ON and 4-OFF per-day selectable-voltage timer
DPST means that timer will turn off two wires going to 240Volt Load or two separate 120V Loads

2) Load means whatever electrical device is controlled by timer. ie fan, light, motor, pump, alarm-bell, water-heater, bowling-ball-machine etc.
Line means cable coming from breaker box.

3) If you have a different timer, then add a comment with photo of inside of timer door for possible identification and complete answer.

4) Selectable voltage means you have to choose voltage.
Timer come preset for 240Volts.
If you have 120V 208V or 277V, then follow the vague instructions shown on page 2 #2 of manual.

5) Do not apply voltage to this timer before matching selectable voltage setting with circuit breaker voltage.

6) ET104C has 6 terminals and can be wired many different ways depending on Load voltage, etc.
This timer can do a lot of different things.
If you have ET102C with 4 terminals, then add a comment and clearly explain voltage, color of wires, and what breaker you have and what Load you are controlling for best answer.

7) ASSume you have 240Volt cable coming from breaker box, and that you are controlling a single 240Volt Load like a water heater or pool pump.

240Volt cable from breaker will have 2 hot wires called Line 1 and Line 2
Line 1 black wire will attach to both terminal 1 and terminal 3 (use a jumper wire between terminal 1 and 3)
Line 2 red or white wire will attach to both terminal 2 and terminal 5 (use a jumper wire between terminal 2 and 5)
Your 240Volt Load will also have 2 wires.
Load 1 black wire will attach to terminal 4
Load 2 red or white wire will attach to terminal 6

How dou you connect the electical wires I connected them and it throws the breaker


Look at rating plate on motor.
Look for volts, watts, amps.
Figure with Volts x Amps = Watts.
Amps = Watts divided by Volts
1 hp horsepower is 756 Watts.

Lets say you have 120Volt 2hp motor
So 2 horsepower motor draws 1500 Watts
Amps = 1500 Watts divided by 120Volts = 12.5 amps = so you need 120Volt 15 amp breaker with at least 14gauge wire (as long as motor is located within 50 feet of breaker.)
If motor is farther away, then you need 20 amp breaker with 12gauge wire.

Look at circuit breaker rating.
If motor is 240 and breaker is 120, then it will trip breaker.
If motor is 120 and breaker is 240, then it will trip breaker.
If breaker is for 15 amps and motor draws 20 amps then it will trip breaker.

Generally speaking, if motor and breaker are 120V, then black wire goes to black wire; white wire goes to white wire and green wire connects to bare copper wire.
If motor and breaker are 240V, then wire colors can be different. Black-red or Black-white from breaker connect to Black-red or Black-white at motor.

Add a comment. Say the motor rating and color of motor wires. Say the breaker size and color of wires coming from breaker and I will help you wire the device.

Are you trying to wire a pool pump?
I found manuals at the Haywood site > I saw nothing for K48m2n11b or anything close to that number

But lets work on the problem and see if I can give you some help:

After opening a few manual and searching for the word 'volt' and 'pump' ... each manual talks about 'pumps' generically, as if the pump is a separate purchase item.

Lower down on the manual page they have a list of pool pumps. A search for the word 'volt' inside the pump manuals says 'match supply voltage to motor nameplate voltage.'

As you know, each electric device has a label showing voltage, wattage, etc. Your pump should show 120Volts or 240V. I didn't see any mention of 3 phase wiring, so I assume your Haywood pump runs on typical residential wiring? And that you are not using 440Volt or 3 phase.

The 120Volt pump will have a black, white and bare ground.
The 240Volt pump will probably have a black, white, red and bare ground
The 240Volt pump could have a black white and bare ground

First the 120V pump:
The 120Volt line from your breaker box will have a black Hot wire, white Neutral wire and bare ground >>> this wire connects color-to-color with pool pump

Next the 240V pump with black, white, red and bare ground
a) The 240Volt line from your breaker box can have the same 4 wires, in which case they connect color-to-color
b) The 240Volt line from your breaker box could have a black white and bare ground, in which case the black goes to black, the white goes to red, the bare coppers are connected, the white pump wire is capped off and not used. If pump does not operate with this wiring, another line from the breaker with wires that match pump might be necessary.

The 240V pump with black white and bare ground
a) The 240Volt line from breaker can have black, white, red and bare ground, in which case the black goes to black, the red goes to white, bare grounds are connected, the white wire is capped off
b) The 240Volt line from from breaker can have black white and bare ground, and this connects color-to-color to the pump

HOW do you know if line from breaker is 120V or 240V?
If you know which breaker wire is connected to, then it's easy
If you do not know which breaker
-turn off power
-separate wires so they can be tested
-use ordinary tester
-stand on dry boards
-tape tester leads to sticks so hands are away from power

-turn on power
-test each wire to bare copper
-tester lights up on Hot wire
-120V line will have 1 Hot wire
-240V line will have 2 Hot wires

No, they should be on separate posts of the same two pole breaker. That can be one breaker with 2 interconnected switches or one double wide breaker with a single switch.

The knowledge you have gained is not to call this electrician again. You know more than he does or carelessness such as he exhibited can be deadly.

you get 120V from any phase (black OR red) to neutral
you get 240V from phase to phase (between black and red) and in this scenario you don't need the white wire.
So for you, connect the black to 1 pole of the breaker and the red to the other pole, connect the green wire to the ground strip and you are done.
A white wire is NEVER connected to a circuit breaker anyway, it is a grounded wire, it would be like connecting a green wire to a black wire, bad idea.
the National electrical code specifies red and black wire color for 240VAC circuits.
As Ask Hank mentionned, nothing wrong with 10/3 wire.

Heater is not heating up.


First, is this a 120 VAC or 240 VAC heater? 120 VAC heater will usually have one Black & one White wire and 240 VAC heater will usually have two Black wires or one Black & one Red wire. If it is a 120 VAC heater then you need to supply the white wire at the heater with a neutral (white) wire from the breaker panel. If it is a 240 VAC heater then you need to verify that you have 240 VAC at the heater from Black lead to Red lead. If you are not sure about how to do this please have an experienced electrician look at it so you don't get electrocuted and/or burn up your new heater. Hope this helps!

I will try this again i don't think i posted it properly.
On the power cord where it connectes to the dryer make sure the red and black wire goes to the outside screws (L1& L2) the white goes in the middle and the green goes to the dryer cabinet.
If you have the red or black going to the middle one it will trip the breaker.

Pool motor wiring


I assume you mean a gfci recepticle? If this is the case you need to take the black wire from the house and pigtail it to go to both the recepticle (Black / Line) and one line side screw of the switch. The white wire from the house goes directly to the line/white side of the recepticle. Also pigtail the ground to go to the green screw on the recepticle, the green screw on the switch, the green wire from the motor, and the ground screw on whatever box you're using. When you purchase the switch make sure you get a two pole switch rated for at least the amperage of the motor. The red wire from the house and the black wire from the pigtailed black will go to the two line side screws of that switch. The red and black from the motor will go to the two screws on the load side of that switch. Make sure to ground everything properly being so close to water. The cover needs to be sealed securely and I recommend the cover that has the lever to activate the switch as opposed to the little door over the switch handle. Also make sure the two breakers supplying those two circuits have a handle that turns them both off at the same time.
