Question about Bernina Sewing Machines

1 Answer

My sewing machine will not pick up the bobbin thread. It sounds normal and pulls the fabric through, but the threads do not intertwine. I had been having problems with the bottom thread clogging and tangling and the fabric being grabbed down through the plate when first starting a seam. There was a loud clunk during a seam, then it wouldn't grab the thread????

What is the problem when sewing the top thread can be pulled right out and the material puckers up

So, it sounds like the bobbin thread is coming to the top of the fabric and the top thread simply lays on top of the fabric. Just a hint: If the thread problem appears on top of the fabric, it is usually a bobbin thread problem. If the thread problem appears under the fabric, it is a top thread problem.

Is the top thread tight, ie pulling the bobbin thread up? Try loosening the top tension.

If that doesn't resolve the problem, then you probably need to tighten the bobbin tension.

Understanding Thread Tension on Your Sewing Machine

Upper thread pulls out of needle as soon as I start to sew. Tension is at 5. Bobbin is correctly wound and seated. Machine is threaded corrctly

If your top thread is picking up the bobbin thread, there is probably nothing wrong with the timing. It sounds like you are not pulling enough thread through the needle eye before beginning to stitch. It also helps to have the needle raised to its highest before taking the first stitch. Pulling the bobbin thread up through the fabric and then holding both thread tails lightly in your left hand while taking the first couple of stitchs will help keep the thread from "back pedaling."

How and Why to Bring up the Bobbin Thread

On my Singer 6235 sewing machine, needle will not pick up bobbin thread. Any suggestions to fix the problem?

Doesn't pick up bobbin thread
1. The bobbin may be in backwards.
2. The bobbin thread & top thread need to be pulled to the back before starting the stitching
3. You need a ballpoint rather than universal needle to sew on t-shirt knits.
4. the needle is in the machine backwards
5. Make sure the needle is the correct one for the fabric being sewed
6. Needle inserted wrong in the needle holder
7. Warped needle
8. Warped bobbin
9. Also could be a timing problem

Why does the top thread sometimes picks up the hook and then picks up bobbin but bobbin then crosses over and makes a mess? Wont work

Basic Tips for All
  1. Always turn the handwheel TOWARDS you (counter clockwise) as turning it in the opposite direction (away from you, clockwise) may knock the timing out requiring repair from a service center.
  2. Always be sure your presser foot is in the DOWN position before sewing. Sewing with the presser foot in the up position will cause your thread to tangle and your bobbin to jam.
  3. Change needles regularly (after 16 hours of use) as dull/weak needles can cause damage to your machine and fabric. Only use SINGER needles on your SINGER sewing machine.
  4. Always be sure you are using the correct bobbin for your machine. Class 66, Class 15 and Class 15J bobbins look very similar. However, using the incorrect bobbin class in your machine can cause damage.

Won't pick up bobbin thread

Did you check the tension? Sometimes when doing lettering or other specialty stitches you would lesson the thread tension which affects the bobbin thread behavior; did you remember to increase it again before switching back to plain sewing? (Though I would still expect it to pick up the bobbin thread... if it's not picking up bobbin thread then I wonder how the loops are being left on the back side of the fabric; it's the tension of the bobbin thread that keeps the top thread from just pulling through. I'm adding this because maybe that's a clue?)

Not picking up the Bobbin thread

Sounds like you have to take off the throat plate and clean out threads under it.  Sometime they ball up and prevent the needle from going down and catching the bobbin thread. You can't see themuntil you take off the plate.  Follow the directions.  It is easy.
