yes it does. there is a lot of free movement on the drum. its almost like there is a stabilizer missing maybe?

  • mmmattmitche Dec 10, 2009

i have looked for the stabilizer bar and i dont see anything disconnected or broken. is there a bushing on the bottom? or underneath the unit it self there are belts and pullies. do they have anything to do with the drum other then spinning

There is a stabilizer bar that stretches across the back of the washer, and a pivot point in the right front corner. Both can be accessed through the back panel (tension bar) or top (pivot) of the washer.Look for one end of the tension bar having become disconnected, or the pivot point having become dislodged or broken.

There is a pivot point on the front right corner of the plate the stabilizer bar is hooked to that could be broken.
If the stabilizer bar is spring loaded, and the spring is broken, then that could be the cause as well.
You can go to SearsPartsDirect.com and see how the washer is assembled. While the stabilizer bar may be captured at each end, there is a pin that may be missing on what would be the right rear corner stabilizer mount, or right end of the bar.

Check with the belt off that the bowl will turn freely, if not check drum bearings or something caught between inner & outer bowl. Make sure when you fit new belt it is adjusted to the right tension or it will slip & burn.

We had the same problem and it is a known problem by Maytag. They came and replaced the springs under the drum as the original ones were not stong enough.

Maytag washer will not agitate. model pavt244aww

TURN THE PULLEY ON THE BOTTOM. ONE DIRECTION WILL CAUSE THE PULLEY TO TRAVEL UP AND RELEASE THE BRAKE, CAUSING THE TUB TO SPIN. TURN IT THE OTHER WAY AND THAT SHOULD BE YOUR AGITATION. YOU SHOULD HEAR THE TRANSMISSION CLUNK AS THE GEARING CHANGES DIRECTION TO GE THE AGITATION ARC. IF NO NOISE IS HEARD, YOU HAVE AN INTERNAL PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION.

Washer model PAVT244AWW agitation noise

Sounds like the motor is going bad. It will only get louder before it finally stops. There is a device that assists the agitation motion that may be bad or is going bad.

you don't say which model you have. one version uses two belts accesible by just tipping the machine back. Another version you must remove the front panel, and drop the pump and you'll be able to replace the one belt.
