Re: card not initialized

There are various free media recovery programs available as downloads from the net. They may help recover the lost data. Many camera stores offer image recovery as a service, also. Contact your local dealer.

I am getting a message that reads "card not initialized". It is a new XD picture card. How do I initialize the card?

To initialize the new XD card, you go into the camera's setup menu and navigate to the format function. Format the card and you might be ready to go. If your new card has an "M" or an "H" preceeding the XD, your camera will need a firmware upgrade before it will recognize the card. Here's a link to the firmware upgrade procedure.

Can't initialize SanDisk Ultra II for S7000

try formatting it in the computer, then initializing it in the camera.
It's possible that the camera can only handle memory up to 1Gb. Try a 1g CF card.

Screen reading memory card not initialized

It sounds like your XD card is corrupted. How and why i couldn't tell you. You will need to get the pictures recovered from the card using a special software (image recovery software, can down load for free from some web sites, or some companies can try and do it for you) and then try and format the card in the camera. DO NOT FORMAT THE CARD BEFORE YOU RETRIVE YOUR IMAGES. If you do all traces of the images may be lost.

All the best and happy snapping.

Screen reading memory card not initialized

  • Insert your memory card into your computer's reader if you have one. If not, you can purchase a multi-format USB Memory Card reader from or
  • 2 Open up 'My Computer'. You should see it under the list of available drives.
  • 3 Check its contents first to make sure that you have the right drive.
  • 4 In 'My Computer', right-click on the drive and choose 'Format'.
  • 5 Leave all the options as they are and click on 'Start'. This is a non-reversible process so make sure this is what you truly wanted to do in the first place.
  • 6 Once the process is completed, take the memory card out and insert it into your Digital Camera or any other device. Try to browse to it to make sure it works fine now.

What type of memory card are you using?  Is this a new problem since you've started using a new memory card?
The A330 can't use some of the newer types of xD cards.  These have letters before the file size like "H512mb" or "M1gb".
You can only use plain xD cards with no letter in front, like the small 8mb or 16mb card that came with the camera. Or, you can download a firmware upgrade to us type "M" xD cards. Read about that here:

Or, if a new memory card is likely not the problem, you could try re-initializing the card.  Make sure to copy any pictures from the card onto your computer first.  Re-initializing will erase all data from the card.
In the Menu, use the right button to go over to "Set".  Arrow up to choose "Set-up".  Then arrow down on the "1" screen to "Format".  It will step you through reformatting the card.
    Hope this helps, -Kelly.

It's not the camera - my Fuji xd memory card

Look for the FORMAT Disk routine.
Consult the owners manual to find out how to get there, would be the easiest way.
