1. Type in your base number

2. Press the EE button

3. Key in your exponent number.

4. Press the button on the bottom right hand side of the calculator that has both the positive and negative sign on it.

5. Press equals button.

Two keys can be used to enter negative exponents on the TI-30Xa scientific
calculator; the [y^x] key or the [EE] key. The [y^x] key is used for
all exponents while the [EE] key is used for scientific notation only.

The examples below will demonstrate how to use both keys:

1) Entering 7^-2.

• Press [7] [y^x] [2] [+/-] [=].

• The calculator will display: 0.20408163.

2) 1*10^-3.

• Press [1] [EE] [3] [+/-] [=].

• The calculator will display: 0.001

The EE (enter exponent) key is located just above the 7 key. If you want a negative exponent, make sure you use the +/- key located just to the right of the decimal point key instead of the - key.

The same way you type in a negative number. Make sure you use the (-) key just to the right of the decimal point key to enter a negative sign, not the - key you use for subtraction.

The same way you'd work with positive exponents. The only difference is that a negative exponent has a negative sign, entered with the (-) key just to the right of the decimal point.

You have a key labeled [Y to the x], use it for all the powers or roots that do not have a dedicated key or key sequence. Let the key be [^]

Ex: 13.675 to the power 1.33 is entered as 13.675 [^] (1.33) [=].

The result is 32.41778634

Ex: (-64)[^](2/3) [=] gives 16 as result. The (-) is the change sign key

Ex: (2.87655)^(-6.778) is entered as 2.87655 [^] ( (-) 6.778 ) [=] 0.0007758

The (-) is the change sign (or the negative of), not the regular minus. When you have a negative exponent or a complicated exponent, it is safer to enclose the whole exponent inside parentheses.

You have to use the EE button right next to the parenthesis and the sigma plus button. So 1.7 EE and then your exponenet. If it is a negative exponent you need to hit the negative button before you type in the number.
