You want to secure the wireless network.
Is there any computer connected to the router with the Ethernet cable?
If not then you will need to connect the computer to the router with the cable.
Check the IP address on the computer. Open the router set up page.
Once you open the set up page, you will find the option to make it secured

Do I need special knowledge to install? Does it need a hardwire from the modem or just go from the wireless router?

You will need to connect your cable modem or DSL modem via CAT5 network cable to the WAN (Wide Area Network) or "Internet" jack of the router. The LAN (Local Area Network) jacks are usually numbered sequentially starting at "1". Equipment that you connect by CAT5 cable from the routers LAN (numbered) jacks should need nothing more.

If yours is a WiFi router, you should then login to the router to access the setup pages. Locate the Wireless tab and ENABLE the Security to WPA or WPA2. Do not leave it unsecured or set to WEP. If the SSID contains the brand or model of the router, ie: Netgear, Linksys, etc. CHANGE IT to anything you want other than your name, address, password, etc. Write down and SAVE your settings. Next, locate and click on the Administration tab. Here, you should change the default PASSWORD and if possible, the USERNAME. Write down and SAVE your settings.

Finally, write these settings on a small piece of paper and tape to the underside of the router. You may want to include the IP address if you made changes. This way, you can always find out the network security credentials if you need to provide them to a guest, etc.

Good luck!

The router is a Microsoft, not the modem. I know of only one other person that owns a M$ router. A Netgear would have been my preference and a lot less trouble.

If you press the window key and R, you'll open up a RUN box that you type in CMD and press OK. It will open up another box (DOS) and you type IPCONFIG. The machine will respond with your IP address and gateway. If the gateway is something like 192.168.1.1 and your IP address is 192.168.1.x where x is anything but 1, it's a good start.

Open up Internet Explorer and type in the 192.168.1.1 or whatever into the address bar. It should open up the web browser for the Microsoft router. Now, did you get a set of instructions with a quick setup? Is this the MN-xxx box? You get to search the M$ website for the setup instructions if you don't have or never had them. Or, remember that $40 Netgear?

The username and password might be admin and admin or blank. That lets you set up wireless security. It should have some pretty self-explanatory help screens to give you either a WEP key or a WPA-PSK key. I'd start with WEP and a simple 10 character hex password like FACE123456. If the neighbors guess it, you can always go for better passwords or change the one you just set.

Hope this works, and think of me down the interstate from you (x187).

Setting up a belkin n wireless router. How do I

You have to go into the setup for the router. Most default to the 192.168.1.1 IP address. You would type that address into your internet browser and hit enter. Then you will be asked for a name and password. If you have your belkin manual it will tell you the default name and password. Once in the settings you can change the password. You can also turn off SSID broadcasting, enable the highest level of security that your particular router supports in conjunction with your computer and enable MAC authentication. If you enable MAC authentication you have to type in the MAC address for each device you wish to have access to the router.

How do I set up this modem as a secured network .

Is your modem wired or wireless?
if it is wired you donot have to worry but if it is wireless and the network is unsecured you need to perform the following steps.
if your computer is using the same wireless connection then you will loose the internet connection wirelessly as you will need to setup the configuration with the computer again..
1st u need to find the ip address of the computer..
click on start, then click on run in the box type in cmd and hit enter
now you will see a black box in that box type in ipconfig and hit enter
out of all the results you will see something which says default gateway there will be numbers beside it make a note of those number(eg it will be something like 192.168.1.125..this is just an example)
go to the browser page and type those numbers in the addres box,
it should open a user name and password box, type in admin/admin as the user name and password,
there you will see a tab for wireless under that tab you will see the option for security and then you need to make it secured..
YOU CAN TELL ME WHO IS THE MANUFACTURER OF THE MODEM SO THAT I CAN EXACTLY TELL YOU WHAT YOU NEED TO DO....

Securing wireless network connection

You need to log into the wireless router either by a computer that successfully connects wirelessly or by physically connecting with an ethernet cable. Once connected, log into the router by open a web browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Apple Safari), and typing the router's address (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) into the Address (or URL) line. The default usernameand password is usually "admin" & "admin" or "admin" & "password". Once successfully logged in, look for a tab or link that says "Wireless" or "Security". You'll be able to change whether security is enabled or disabled, and the password associated with it. Your security options are WEP or WPA (or WPA-PSK). WPA-PSK is the most secure, but WEP is also an acceptable choice. Select the security option of your choice and either enter text into the passphrase generator or choose your own password and type it into one of the security key text fields. If you use a password that is not a plain english combination of letters and numbers, be sure to write it down so that you can enter it as needed on other wireless devices that need to access your router (ie-pda phones, game consoles, laptops, desktops, etc). Be sure to save changes so that the security settings and password is saved.
Let me know how you make out.

you will have to access the router by the ip address.
(192.168.??.??)once you log in, user name blank and password admin. you will have to set up wireless security. there are several ways and each that is selected has a brief tutorial.

Sometimes, people who are gamers or use Ipods, leave the router unsecure but limit the wireless access by mac address or by ip address so only those wireless devices gain access.

Security

Till the time you put a access code for the wireles it would show it as a unsecure connection. You can change this by accessing the router page.Just type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of internet explorer.Than it would ask you for username and password. Its ussually admin and the password field blank.Than go to wireless settings and the security to WEP.than you can put a password of either 5 or 10 digits.U can put your phone # which would be easy to remember and than just save the setting.Next time when you would try to connet to it than it would ask you to put the access code and will show up as secure connection.
I hope that helps
