To transfer video to your computer from the ZR100, you will need to connect the camera to the computer via the firewire interface. The ZR100 does not have a USB interface.

Hi, I've always been able to connect my Canon MV4i MC camcorder to my computer (Windows XP) via the Firewire port. However, I've just bought a new computer (Windows 7) which has no Firewire port....

Why have you bought a 'new' computer with such an outdated operating system ? Have you an available expansion slot on the motherboard to install a Firewire card ?

You don't say what make/model your camera is. Most tape based camcorders (mini-dv) usually download better with a Firewire (DV) connection. Some mini-DV cameras only use the USB connection for stills (if they have one) and can only download video by Firewire. This is because you have to play the tape into the computer, not just copy a file.

Most PCs have a USB port, but no Firewire port. Macs often have a Firewire port but may not have USB.

Suitable Firewire (DV) cables can easily be found on Amazon or eBay. You will need the kind with a small (four pin) connector at one end and a larger (six pin) connector at the other.

I have connected my canon xm2 to the computer via the usb cable but nothing is happening? how do i get my videos on the computer?

It looks like the USB port on this camera is used to transfer stills only. The camera has a DV port for a "Firewire" connection to stream video to a computer, but most PCs don't have such a port (Macs do). You can add Firewire ports to a PC using an add-on card. You will need a cable too. These things are available cheaply on eBay or Amazon.

TRANSFERRING VIDEO FOOTAGE TO COMPUTER

Hello,
you can access via USB only SD card on your camcoder.
The only way to transfer from the tape is via Firewire (IEE 1394) . You should have this port on your PC or laptop, if not you can buy external firewire card .
regards,
Konstantin

Transfering video to Mac

Digital video on the ZR400 is transferred to a computer only via the DV out port, which will connect to a firewire port on a PC or a Mac. USB will not transfer video, only images to and from the card.

Better Late than never....
The usb port is for the memory card only....You will need a firewire to transfer over the DV tape.

Connection

A digital video camera may be connected to a computer using an optional OHCI compatible, digital video capture kit available commercially. These kits must be capable of using the IEEE1394 (FireWire) interface to enable you to import digital video signal and still images into your computer. For those models equipped with a separate USB port, the camcorder may also be connected to a computer via its mini-B USB port, for downloading still images recorded on the SD/MMC card.
