Question about KDS K717s 17" LCD Monitor

3 Answers

The monitor goes blank after just a few seconds or sometimes works for hours.

I have a KDS Model 700P, Product # K717S which is about 1 year old. It works fine sometimes for hours and other times the screen will look a little dark and then go blank after just a few seconds. Shutting off and then on again makes it work for about 1 second before going blank again.

Same problem here with my KDS monitor, I suspect heat build-up,

We have the 19 inch K917 and it too goes dark after a few minutes. It is probably the display tube inverter circuit. Another web page "Selectric Typwriter museum" at selectric.org had the same problem and he installed a small fan in the back of the monitor to blow air into the power supply. Like many monitors the AC to DC supply is built into the monitor. They may not have proper airflow for longterm operation.

Do these monitors have a small easily replaceable inverter PCB like laptop screens have?

My monitor worked one day - gone the next. Nothing on the screen except a bright green glow. No tech support for this problem. They want $70. just to look at it.

Power supply filter caps will be he first thing to check, look for leaking/bulging tops.

Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

The most common problem with LCD monitors is the capacitors that are on the power pack. the pack usually looses or pops as we say 2-6 of them after 3-5 years. its almost a certainty after 5 years. a component repair tech can replace these but unless you can find some one like me who will do it for cheap to save the landfill you most likely will buy a new one.

Can my KDS (#K717S-700P) monitor be wall mounted?

This monitor can be wall mounted but I do not know what bracket you would use.

If you look on the back of the monitor you should see 4 indents in the sticker near the corners. If you don't then rub around near the corners of the sticker. With a sharp knife or pin you should be able to lift out these tiny stickers. You need to measure the distance between these on the horizontal, vertical and diagonal then you should be able to ask somebody at your local TV dealer for help locating the correct bracket.

I'm sorry i can't be more helpful.

This is a common problem across many monitors, unfortunately. The problem stems from one of two things, typically.

Itis either the Power Inverter board (Inverter Mirage Electronics AD-1700Rev:F 200-000-170DTL1 VERSION:A) or a weak or dying backlight.

Ifyour monitor comes on for a few seconds then you can test the backlight byusing the controls to get into the backlight brightnes settings on theOSD and turning it WAY down.

If that doesn't work or if it won't come on at all then it islikely bad capacitors on the Power board mentioned above. If you feeladventurous and know how to solder then you might be able to fix thisyourself. You need to be careful however because you are dealing withhigh voltage in there and capacitors CAN hold a charge long after youhave unplugged the unit. You can read more about this power board aswell as how to replace the bad caps HERE.

Ifthat's not for you then I would recommend taking it to a local TV shopfor them to fix. The parts shouldn't be more than $20, but labor can beexpensive.

Most are snapped at the corners and center of each side.  A plastic ipod pry tool will usually get the process started, and you just work your way around the frame.  Starting at one corner is best.

Two possible causes are bad capacitors or a bad light inside the LCD panel.

Open the unit and check to see if any of the capacitors in the power supplyor other boards look domed or vented on the top.

Replace any capacitors accordingly. Monitor should work fine after that.

If not try checking the surface-mount transistors on the inverter board that run the lights. Some times these transistora go bad. Also, you may have a bad light inside the panel. This is tough to test without a spare light to use for troubleshooting the panel lights.

You can take the panel apart and inspect the lamps but it is very tedious. It's tough enough to get them apart and back together again never mind keeping the layers clean. You have to try not to get any dust between the layers or you will see it in the picture.

There's usually two light fixtures each of which holds two lamps. One fixture at the top and one at the bottom. Remove them one at a time and inspect the lamps to see if any are broken or very dark on the ends. If one looks out of place, it could be bad.

You'll have to find replacement lights on the net. It's not easy to replace them, but if you've gone this far, good luck. You should be able to get generic instructions off of the site that sells the lamps.
