Question about Garmin GPSMAP 76CSx Handheld GPS GPS Receiver

1 Answer

My Garmin GPSmap 76CSx was working just fine. After leaving it unused for a couple months with a pair of alkaline batteries installed, I tried to turn it on. It would not come on. I checked the battery compartment and discoverd that at least one of the batteries had leaked. I have cleaned the compartment and the battery contacts, and installed fresh batteries. It still won't power up. Could the battery leakage have caused this NO START problem ? How can I determine that for sure? Is there a quick fix that I can perform?

I was very optimistic about your suggestion to attempt powering up with the USB powersource. Unfortunately the unit continues to play dead.

I'm resigned that it's time to ship it back to Garmin.

Thanks for the suggestion, though. Definitely made sense.

Try connecting it to USB and powering it up, to confirm that unit still works overall. You probably damaged battery connectors. Check if you can clean the connectors better, otherwise you may need to do some soldering to fix them, by yourself or n a repair shop. Check with Garmin if they have suggestions: a leaking battery should not disable a GPS.

Gpsmap 180 firmware corrupt

It sounds like it has lost its memory battery. Usually you
would get a "memory battery low" message as it is on its
way out but you don't mention that so perhaps it has
completely failed.

The battery is rechargeable - if you leave it switched off
and loaded with a fresh set of alkalines for a few days it
may recover. If not contact Garmin as they have replaced
many memory batteries free of charge even out of warranty.

I have a Garmin 76CSx that freezes on start-up screen, no buttons have any effect. Only way to switch off is to pull batteries out.

I had the same thing. Seemed to be a faulty SANDISK 2GB MicroSD card. When I pulled it out, the unit worked again.

Serial number

Pull off the battery panel. In-between the 4 pin connector and the battery compartment you will find an 8 digit number.

Note the serial number is different from the unit ID which can be found by using the Garmin Mapsource software tools, or by going to:
Menu >> Setup >> System >> Menu >> Software Version

Tide station

please verify if firmware of your receiver is up to date.

the newest version of GPSMAP 76CSx is Ver. 3.60, realised on Feb 18, 2008

if not, make upgrade either by WebUpdater application or download it direct from www.garmin.com

enter: www.garmin.com
then click "On the Trail" -> Mapping Handhelds -> GPSMap 76CSx -> quick links: Updates&Downloads -> Unit Software

Battery compartment connectors

I had this happen with my 76CS. The cost for a look at it is $125. I used a piece of aluminum foil.

Fold it over, make certain it holds tight against the wire.

It's not the best solution, but it works.

You could also search for a device with a similar battery contact, unsolder it, and pull the Garmin apart and solder it in. I'm still looking for the right device.
