You have to run it through the aux input, the usb port will not play an ipod through it as it doesn't have the ipod 2.0 software on it, you can get a ipod connector that plugs into the back of the head unit, and then plugs into your ipod and you can control it from that as well as charge it, but other than that you have to use the aux input. The only thing you can play through the usb port is music on a thumb drive.

Where do you plug mp3 or ipod connections

Unfortunately your deck does not have any ports for ipod or mp3 players. If you would like to connect such items you need to upgrade. Here is the link that has your deck specifications

I am not a fan of CDE line, you are better off with CDA line.

Can I hard wire an IPOD connection to a Alpine CDE 7856

There are 1/8"(headphone cable) to rca cables available at Radio Shack, Best Buy, Walmart, etc.... If you have an open pair of RCA's female connections coming out the rear of your deck plug your rca male to 1/8" male into that then into your IPOD.

I have a CDE-9872 and it wont pick up my ipod touch

Add Alpine's optional "Full Speed" connection cable and you'll be able to use the CDE-9872 to control your iPod. -Crutchfields website

This is compatible with first and second generation iPods touch.
fyi- if you have a mini-stereo aux in jack on the deck you can connect a ipod touch compatible mini stereo cable to the earphone jack of your ipod.
