Question about Brother MFC 7840W Printer

1 Answer

Will a Brother MFC-7840W wireless printer work with a Netgear RangeMax Next Wireless Router (WNR854T)? My Toshiba laptop setup was a breeze with this router. I'm having trouble connecting the printer to the wireless network, though. One thing: the WEP key is 26 characters and the printer entry screen seems to allow for fewer. This is where I get hung up. Thanks.

When entering the wep key, after each character is entered push the right arrow. If the same character repeats itself it will overwrite the other if you dont.

I tried this. It does not work. Hitting the right arrow puts an asterisk in the current character and advances the cursor to the next character. After doing this for several characters, all you see is asterisks. When I tried to enter characters for my 26 character WEP key that went beyond the 16 character entry window, the last character simply kept overwriting. I followed the installation instructions exactly as written. This part of the installation should not depend on the router. Mine is a Linksys WRT54G.

Brother mfc-7840W not picking up wireless IP address

It is common, mainly because the MFC connection is lost to your PC. Are you able to print or scan from another wireless PC that you have? If yes, contact your network admin or router oem. If no, reset network card. Run the Setup Wireless Wizard. Make sure you have router info such as SSID, Network Security Key, Authentication Method (Open, Shared, WPA/WPA2-PSK), Encryption (None, WEP, AES, TKIP). Enter those info, it must be CASE SENSITIVE. Just in case you dont know your router info, contact your router oem.
For Advanced Users.1. Click your Wireless Icon at Task Tray2. Right-Click your Wireless Network Name3. Select Properties4. Go to Wireless Security Settings5. Take note of the settings that you have there and enter it again on your MFC

I dont think you have the network set up in the correct way. You should be using a wireless router. If it is a 4 port router, your computer network cable should be in port number 1, the printer can be be wireless or cabled into port 2 of the router. This way you have the internet and can still print wirelessly to the printer and so can anyone else.

Low connection NETGEAR WNR854T RangeMax Next Wireless-N Router

Ok... Hate to be the bearer of bad news but this product has a bad reputation for disconnects and dieing after 6 months. If you're up for the challenge you could switch firmware versions to an open source version like tomato.

Ignore the instructions that come with the printer, choose Open System, then choose WEP, enter, and it hooks up. Thanks to the above posters for this solution.
