Question about ViewSonic Graphic VG2021m LCD Monitor
Have a VG2021 monitor. Has been fine. In past month, it intermittantly refuses to light up even though the blue light is on. I almost did not get it to function today. What is wrong and what is the solution? When it's on, there is no complaint. I have checked all of the connections and they are tight.
I've repaired two of these, so far, by replacing the same two bulging electrolytic capacitors in each. If I recall, they're 220uF, 25V, radial. (Radio Shack has 35V capacitors that work just fine.)

Open the monitor, examine the circuit boards. Look for small components that look like small cans, these are capacitors. If you see any that look bulged on top, then your problem can probably be solved by replacing these. Check out the following sites;
Follow the directions and good luck!

There are two places to look for the problems, the backlight inverter board and the power supply. Look for burnt parts, bad capacitors, etc.
Please post back what you find.

Eyedocmel, It's not you! It's not the PC! It's the monitor's "switch-mode-power-supply"!!! This seems to be a black screen problem. Here is what could possibly be the problem and cause!!! If this monitor connects directly to an AC outlet without a "BLACK BRICK" between the outlet and back of monitor you have an INTERNAL "switch-mode-power-supply" that takes AC and converts to low voltage DC volts. (+5v or +3.3v and +12-to-+18vdc) The +12 is used to power-up another circuit called an "inverter" (electronic ballast) to light-up the 2 thin "cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamps" on rear of the lcd panel you look at!! Now if any of the components on the SMPS/inverter circuit board develop what is known as "thermally intermittant" connections at the place they are physically soldered to the circuit board you will possibly have your type of symptom until the solder joint becomes oxydized from the surrounding atmosphere. Then it won't turn on at all! The first place I would look would be the power devices in the inverter circuit. I use an old USN Bausch-Lomb inspection microscope to find these type of board FAULTS. Thermal intermittant connection is result of Thermal /Vibration Fracture occuring at site. Cold solder joints and T/Vfractures will need to be resoldered to correct problem. Also inspect SMPS for same and also for SWOLLEN electrolytic filter capacitors!!!!
Read some of my other responses here on fixya and do some research at Youtube for productive, informative video clips of "lcd monitor disassembly" and "lcd monitor repair" FYI !!! lmistyrel on aim.com or 12fixlouie on fixya. My recomendation is get new display AND repair the Viewsonic VG2021. Keep as spare or use at home. Read more of my responses to others with BLACK SCREEN to find out some other options not mentioned this post. You should be able to access my profile on fixya. Bye for now.
