Question about Rancilio SILVIAespresso&cappuccino machine

1 Answer

Rancilio producing very very slow shots...even when no portafilter.

Have had the Silvia for about 3 years now with no major problems until this morning. Noticed it takes very very long for the shots to fill. I tried decalcifying the machine thinking that would take care of the problem. Cleaned all of the normal parts and when I had then unscrewed I turned on the machine to see and found still only a trickle of water coming out. I know the water is coming out much slower than it used to. The steam wand works great and the water comes out of it nice and fast. It makes me think it isn't the pump if this comes out really fast. Helpppp....

Re: Rancilio producing very very slow shots...even when...

From your description i can conclude only 2 things:

  1. coffe grinded too fine
  2. pump pressure low
i think you can chek these 2 and have your perfect espresso again

Why won't my portafilter stay engaged once the water starts dripping? It flies off and sprays coffee grounds, and this started last week. Stays in place only if I wrestle with the filter handle.

It is possible that the grind you are using is too fine and causing so much back pressure that the portafilter is moving, also possible that the group gasket installed need to be replaced, I have also seen this happen with damaged screens.

Our Silvia, almost 8 years old, is putting out shots too fast (10 to 15 seconds), even though we've been dialing down the grind on Rocky more fine, putting more coffee in, and tamping harder. We...

Try to redo what you have been doing, but set it to the extremes to see if everything is functioning. If you set the grind say to 4, it should come out very slow or maybe not at all.

I have a Silvia which is about 6 years old. Over the last few weeks, when I am brewing coffee, some water leaks around the portafilter. The portafilter is well seated and properly tamped. How do I approach...

Have you ever changed the brwe head gasket? It should be changed yearly at least. They get hard from the heat and won't seal. They should be soft to make a good seal. You can change it your self. I have left post on changing gaskets. Look for Silvia solutions.

Rancilio Silvia - Water coming from behind into the drip tray when pouring a shot.

When you are finished and turn the pump off, the 3 way valve opens and relieves the pressure in the brew head so you don't get an explosion of coffee when you remove the portafilter.

I've tried grinds from a very fine to a coarser grind in my Rancilio Silvia, but the water is going through the portafilter/coffee too quickly. When I clean out the portafilter, there is too much dry...

Check the shower screen to make sure it is not damaged. Then try this get coffee ground from the store at #2, 3, 4 and 5 at least 1/4 pound each then use that to figure out what setting works best for your machine, also note the tamping pressure. Fill portafilter to rim then tamp to fill ring in basket.

Temperature problem

Keep portafilter in the head with no coffee in it at all times, preheat portafilter and cup before you brew a coffee.

Silvia leaking water

The solenoid valve needs back flushing the correct way with a espresso machine detergent like Cafiza, or Joe Glo. Place a 1/2 teaspoon in a blind basket. (don't come with Silvia). Place blind basket in portafilter and brew like making espresso, but run pump for no more than 5 to 10 seconds or until the pump starts to change tone (slow down). Stop the pump when either of these things happen or Silvia can be damaged. Repeat the pump 5 to 10 times leaving a 1 minute wait between cycles, or the suds comming out the 3 way valve turns pure white, with no coffee stains in the foam. Remove the portafilter and rinse then reinsert and repeat the cycles to rinse the internals. This should take care of the problem. If not you may have to replace the 3 way.

Waterflow/heat seems fine - but little/no extraction

Try running the gro;up without the portafilter in place, what does the water flowq look like: is it a nice strong flow or barely a dribble. If if is barely a dribble, backwash machine with purocaff and check shower screen, that may be clogged. If you have a nice flow then try adjusting the grind on the coffee grinder.
