What happens if I put too much salt in dishwater

Hey Des,

I assume you're referring to the pool rather than dishwater. Adding too much salt won't necessarily do harm instantly. However, to some swimmer, the high salt content can be quite rough on skin and even hair. Aside from swimmer experiences, any masonry around your pool will erode quicker over time due to salt being extremely abrasive by nature. I'd recommend getting a salt tester strip or electronic meter to check your salt.

To add on, if the salt generator is constantly saying to add salt, it's probably time to clean your salt cell also.

How much salt do I need to use; we live in Cornwall water VERY soft have never put salt in b4.

your problem is not the salt, water in cornwall is not soft either, soft water is actually good for your dishwasher... soft water in cornwal is from rain but not from pipes or wells...

i assume this is dishwasher as this question is in dishwasher section. you state that you never put salt before - and why you should put it in now?!? if idea sound st00pid to you - probably it is...

red light indicates that something is wrong, i would start in case of dishwasher with through cleaning of drain filters and drain pump, checking sensors on the doors and injectors, checking seals, then run empty on full cycle and see if anything changes, cannot provide detailed instructions as you did not give any data. i would suggest google it "howto check whateveryourmodelis function free", words howto and free are keywords, whatever you put between them is a question.

now, to have your question answered, you need to state it correctly:

1. what manufacturer
2. what model
3. year of manufacturing
4. what it seem to be a problem
5. what did you try

hope this little intro will help you to solve the problem by yourself, do not forget to vote...

Hi my kleenmaid silent system think it's a dw2 the salt button is flashing you turn it on it goes to start then stops we cleaned it all out and fix the problem once before but this time nothing works. I'm...

If water is soft in your area you can ignore the salt indicator light and operate the dishwasher without adding regenerating salt. However, you need to ensure the salt reservoir is filled with water to the brim. So add water into the reservoir and then put the cap back on.

I want to know where to put my dishwasher tablet in my Kenwood KDW4TTSL please. And where does the salt go and how much do I use?

Im presuming that you don't have a manual. If you would like one, you can download a free PDF from here:

According to the manual:

There is a recess on the right hand side of the door for detergent (Picture on page 6 of the manual). You can put a tablet in here.

With regard to salt (Also on page 6):

1. Unscrew the cap from the salt container

anticlockwise, which is located on the right side of the

inner box.

2. Load the salt into the container. Each time you may load 250g of salt, which can be used for 15

3. Fill the water into the salt container until a small amount of water comes out(it is very important

when you use it for the first time).

4. Screw the cap back carefully.

1. Load the salt before the beginning of wash cycle so as to prevent corrosion.

2. Load the salt when the salt indicator light in the control panel is illuminated.

3. Only use dishwasher salt.

Have lost my manual. Cannot remember when putting in the dishwasher salt, should the cap be showing the red spot? Not sure at what point you put in the salt? Thanks for your help

Not sure if you are referring to the dishwasher detergent or the rinse-aid.

The two items are mentioned on pages 13 and 14 of the user guide for GU2400 model.

Hope this helps. Cannot find any mention of salts or cap red spot.

My dishwasher will not take salt the salt indicator light will not come on

i assume you have replenished the salt - you need to do this from time to time.
if you have put salt in, then undo the cap over the softener and stirr the salty water - may do the trick.
if you live in a soft water area, it does not matter anyway

The salt light keeps burning

the salt light is done by a reed switch operated by a float in the salty water. float may be stuck - give softener (where you put in the salt) a tap and also stir the water inside the softener. i assume you have put in enough salt. its not a serious fault
