Re: re: PS2 Will Play PS1 games but sticks in browser...
When you change the laser it is not just a matter of remove and replace ..you have to have the right gear to set up the lense..all versions have different settings

Since PS1 Games Have Less Compaction Than PS2 Games It Needs Full Use Of The Laser Sensor To Play The PS2 Game. If Its Dirty Open Up The PS2 And Clean The Laser Sensor With Rubbing Alcohol And A Cotton Swab. It May Also Be The Fact That You Knocked Something Loose And The PS2 Cant Run At Full Capacity. If The 2nd Thing Happened You Must Take It To Game Stop,Eb Games, Or Any Electronics Store And Have Them Fix It. Look For A Video On Youtube That Gives Details On How To Clean The Sensor.
Try wiping the disks in a circular motion with a cotton t-shirt, tissue or cleaning cloth, then try again. If it still doesn't work, try a PS2 game. If it works, try another PS1 game. If the other PS1 game doesn't work, the PS1 part of your PS2 system may be broken. Your PS2 has, inside of it, a miniaturized PS1. If that mini-PS1 breaks, you can't play PS1 games. If the PS2 game doesn't work, you probably need a lens repair. If the other PS1 game works, then your games are defective and you should get new ones.
It's likely the DVD laser behind the lens is faulty, this would allow it to only play PS1 games. You can try contacting sony as they do both warranty and non warranty repairs.
your slimline might not normally play the games Use swap magic it should have two discs one for booting PS2 games and one for booting PS1 games you simply put the appropriate swap magic disc and then the game you want to play
Clean the LAsers Lens with Q-tip lightly dampened with Glass cleaner, then dry the lens. Try it see if that gets it going again.
If not your lasers lens and supporting frame is probably melting down. You will need a new laser.

Hi
If it will play DVD's this is a good sign. You will only need to clean the lens of the laser. Also clean the hub that the Disc rides on. I hope your in the right posting area, this is for the Phat PS2 consoles with the drawer that comes out to put the CD in. Procedure is different for Slim PS2.
Disconnect power and turn the case upside down.
Remove the screw covers to expose the case screws. These are little square pieces or square rubber pads. You can use a thin knife blade to pry the hard plastic squares up.
Remove all the screws.
REmove the Warranty sticker to the right edge of the power socket.
Turn the PS2 over to set it right side up.
lift the top cover from the back and pull it forward slightly to clear the CD tray. Be careful of a possibly Ribbon cable attached to the lid going to the REset/Eject buttons. Roll the cover over to the right leaving the ribbon intact.
Remove the Cd tray lid.
Polish the Laser lens, and remove any lint or hair from the Cd area. Use Alcohol and cotton swabs to clean the laser lens. By the way, Alcohol will damage a PS2 Slim lens. All lens are not created equally.
Hook up the power and A/v Cables.
REmove the little white disc from the Cd tray lid.
Place a Disc on the spindle, and cap the disc with the little white piece that you removed from the CD tray cover.
Boot up the PS2 and test it, Continue cleaning until you get it to work.
Put it back together, and your in business.
