Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

1 Answer

I have an old Hermes 3000. I was in the middle of typing away and the machine was working perfectly. Then all of sudden the carriage will no long stop. It just slides directly to the right margin and stops there but can't be held anywhere else, literally making it impossible to type. I've looked through my owner's manual and it says nothing about this. Please help!

It might be that you tab key is engaged which would do this. also try gently moving the carriage to a point, pressing the space bar and then releasing the carriage. It might be the escapement..
Hope this works!

I recently bought a 1964 Hermes Ambassador typewriter. The typewriter is in very good shape, -but the carriage is slid all the to right (as if ready to start typing)and will not move. It acts as if it is...

I worked on typewriters for many years. If the unit has been sitting for years, it is in need of a good cleaning when you depress a key, it activate a mechanism that rotates a pawl on a toothed rack under The carriage. Plus there is a final stop that stops the carriage from going to far too the right. Flip the unit up and push the carriage lightly and watch the mechanisms spray light lube and keep moving the mechanism it should loosen up. Depress space bar and gently pull the carriage to the left. You may also have lost the tension cord. That's a spring assisted coil that pulls the carriage. You have an old unit there. It was great in it's time.

Typewriter carriage

The typewriter needs the escapement adjusted, or you have a bind in the escapement, and it probably needs a good cleaning and oiling. This usually done by a pro.

I have a Hermes 3000 typewriter. Once I set the left margin, it's not sitting there. It moves fast to the right margin. I am not able to type a single word because of this. Is the mainspring is bad? ...

The mainspring is not bad or the carriage would not move that way. It sounds like and escapement problem either from the carriage release sticking, the escapement itself needing adj. which you probably cannot do, the escapement rack is bent or maladjusted, or the tab function is sticking or maladjusted. Check the carriage release levers to see if they are sticking. Also make sure the tab function is knocking off so the carriage is not in constant tab mode. Hope this helps.

I have a Hermes 2000 typewriter. The carriage goes half the way and get stick. Please let me know how to solve this situation. Appreciate your help. thanks !

It is not broken. The machine was designed this way. If you hit the key number 34 (two arrows on the right hand side) it will release. It stops a few spaces after the bell. There is another way to release this feature and I am trying to figure it out as well.

Where can i get a manual for my smith-corona typewriter?

Can you give us any help in identifying the machine? Is it manual or electric, for example?
There's a downloadable and printable manual for the Smith-Corona Standard Portable here.
Bear in mind that if this is an old typewriter then there is a very good chance that no one has bothered to rewrite the manual since the invention of the internet. In such cases the best you can expect is a scan of an old paper manual.

Hermes 3000 carriage is "locked."

I think there's a lock there in the spacing. Mine can be locked by pulling the spacing lever far upward. Just set your spacing and I think it will unlock.

Cartridge jammed and sccaning error

When you open the clamshell does the ink carriage slide back and forth with jamming?

If not then try getting some silicone grease and apply a very very thin line of it on the rail.

If it does then try making a copy, in the middle of the process, before the error, open it up and see if the ink carriage has even moved from "Home" position.

You might have a belt issue and this could be one of many things, stripped plastic gear, streatched belt...
