Basic cable scrambled on ANT input but not PIP

I have a toshiba 57H81 rear projection tv. I have basic cable (no box) hooked up to input ANT 1 and the picture is scrambled. When I turn on PIP I get a clear picture on PIP but still scrambled on main window. I also tried hooking it up to input ANT 2 and it didn't work either. When I hooked it up to another, it worked fine.

It sounds like you have the common problem with these models. The poblem has occured so offten that toshiba issued a service bulliteen about it. There is a problem with a cuircit board called the Hypermodule its a signal processing board/ the ideal situation would be replaced this board but it has happen so much it may be difficult to find this ooard so this board can be repaird. The secound problem is to fix this board 11 very very small parts called capacitors need to be replaced. i have also replace these and only someone advance in solder should attempt it very small. twezers and magnifer. You can hire someone but it very labor intensive. Our shop charges 300 just in labor It can be fixed but I would adviise its just no worth it

It sounds like a typical problem with your Hypermodule. It will make the video distorted or ziz zag shapped in most cases.

If you are a decent do it yourselfer you can get a rebuild kit from www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kit that includes all the parts and detailed step by tep photo instructions.

danny_brotsc,

Unfortunately your units tuner is the old NTSC system and will not work with the new digital system without a cable box.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.

Cable company switched to digital, now my Ant A port on the vs-50603 does not receive signals. I can somewhat view the analog signals through my PIP only. other tv's in the house came back with signal 5...

When the cable company offers you digital cable, you typically need a cable box to unscramble the digital channels. Therefore you need to connect either a coaxial cable from the cable box's RF output, if it has one, or connect 3 RCA cables from the yellow, white and red jacks on the rear panel of the cable box to the TV. Analog channels only (if available) will go straight thru over the coaxial RF hookup. They are not scrambled. Select the proper input source on the TV for the cable box.

first try replacing the batteries in the remote, second make sure that the remote is adjusted to "tv" using the input button. The "cable/tv " selects the input being either ant or cable. google for owner's manual for more infromation..

Check if it has a scrambled image on all sources ie - DVD- VCR - cable/satellite box. Since the PIP is normal it sounds like the signal source is bad.

HDTV CABLE NOT HOOKED UP/WORKING

COMP 1 and 2 are for 480i/p sources. Hook it to the 1080i capable on the back. Also make sure the HD DVR is outputting 1080i not 720p. The Mits can not disply 720p and will show a scrambled screen if you try to.

the tv has a built in decoder. if its scrambled it may be on the wrong setting. try resetting tv to factory settings and see if it sorts its self out. if not it may need the av board changing as it has a fault with the decoder chip.
