SOURCE: Copying data

click on the drive once so it highlighted. Hit the 2 keys apple and I. this will bring up a dialog box with the drives information. See if the drive is locked. Choose ownership and permission below and click on the padlock, you want read and write permissions and you will only need your system password to change this. Also check if the drive is formatted properly for Macintosh use. If there is nothing on the drive that is crucial, open DISK utility and format it for OS extended.

SOURCE: My toshiba calmee titan cannot be read modified with Mac

The hard drive needs to be either a) reformatted with a file system the Mac can manipulate (HFS+ would be ideal) or b) install MacFUSE NTFS-3G.

IMac won't read Imation 160GB Apollo 2.5

Mac's won't read windows format disc, even if it's capable of reading the files wich I believe Newer Mac Operating Systems CAN DO, it can not read the file SYSTEM used to place them on the disc. You need a third computer. Put the files on a nother computer or two if you need the room or on another media or pocket drive. Use a program that VERIFIES the were moved without errors while copying them, the use the Mac to format the now empty disc drive and download Mac Pooler, or File Stuffer, and copy the files back onto the disc. Now the Mac will be able to read the drive they're on.

If the drive is external, you can try to remove it from its case and attempt to read in using another adapter. If the drive itself will not spin up a data recovery service may be your only option (usually expensive)

Can i transfer information to a mac

If the external hard drive has been formatted on a PC in NTFS file format then the MAC cannot read data off this hard drive.
The FIX..
Connect the USB external hard drive to a Windows computer and copy your data off this hard drive to the computer.
Then format the external hard drive in FAT32 file format. (the MAC can read and write to data to and from a Windows PC)
Now copy the your data from the computer back onto the external hard drive.
Now you can connect the external hard drive to the MAC and download your data to the MAC.

Does not read on the mac

If the USB hard drive was formatted in NTFS on a PC then the MAC cannot read this hard drive.
If you format this hard drive on a PC in FAT32 file format then the MAC can exchange data between the MAC and the PC.
The MAC can read and write PC data to this hard drive.

Hi, I am having problems transferring files from my macbook pro(never had this problem its like its locked out my laptop) to the hard drive it keeps telling me "The item cannot be moved because LaCie...

Yup because you formatted in NTFS yesterday on your friend's windows. only window pc's can write to the hard drive.
so you will need to reformat it under mac to mac extended.
or if you want to FAT if you want to write from both platforms.
please note that FAT file size is limited to 4GB's..
you could download NTFS write drivers for mac but it is unsafe and data can be corrupted.

"The item cannot be moved

Try reformatting the drive using Disk Utility. Could be that the file system on the drive is not supported by Mac in read/write mode.

What I would be tempted to do is to reformat the hard drive of course THIS WILL WIPE OUT ANY DATA that is currently on the drive. To do this go applications then utilities and select disk utility. Once opened select your seagate drive from the left hand box and then select the erase option. Under volume format you can select Mac OS Extended and put an name in the name box. You can select MS-DOS (FAT) if you want to use on both PCs and Macs. Then click erase.

Hope this helps.

Got a new imac moved ms office file to my book -

Try to change the File system of the hard drive to FAT. It is currently in NTFS. Mac recognizes NTFS file system as read only. You must use the disc utility and format it with a volume format of MS DOS.

By changing it to MS DOS (FAT) you can use it with Mac and PC. Readable and writable.

Freezes up During Backups

I suggest an application called "Disk Warrior" it has always maintained high ratings among us Mac enthusiasts it has a hardware test function built into it and seems to be a little better at verify and repair functions than Disk Utilities which you can try also if you haven't yet. You may also consider trying a different firewire cable if you have one handy. Other than that a reformat should have put the disk back into an original state however the disk could have been damaged by not un-mounting it in rare mac cases. If you have the time you can also reformat the disk again although I would try the first two options first.

Recognized - but no mount

Don't know about the MAC part, but an I/O error implies that the either the source file cannot be read or the destination drive will not write. This is usually an indicator of a bad HDD. To check, I would attempt to connect the external drive to another computer. If it still gives the same indication, contact the drive manufacturer about data recovery recommendations
