Try a different display setting, for example, 1280 x 800 or 1024 x 768. Once you can see (computer) display, then move onto the best resolution which your display card support for your HDTV. Good luck..

(btw, if your dell has two vga sockets, get another vga cable. Then set your computer to a dual display mode, one for your computer and the other for HDTV. this way you will never lose your display.)

I need to extend my screen so one programme is on tv while desk top stays on computer

Just hit function then F7 (on most laptops). This will allow you to use VGA out and your laptop screen at the same time. Easy-peazy!
FYI, that is how people do presentations where the screen is behind them. You just hook a projector up to the VGA out, then cycle through function F7 until both the laptop and the TV are on, or just the TV is on.

Vga hook up

may need to tell the laptop in the screen resolution settings to display the image on the tv instead of the laptop. Right click on the empty desktop of the laptop and go to either propertie or screen resolution and then make sure that the computer can see that the tv is hooked up and that the image is showing on the tv instead of the laptop. You may also need to change the mode on the tv to vga.

Can you help with connecting a laptop VGA to a philips hdtv lcd (model #32pf7421d) with a component cable? The laptop recognizes that it is connected, but nothing comes up on the TV except for...

Check your laptop with the same VGA cord on some projector or a monitor. If it works there, then there is a problem with your TV's VGA switching circuit. If it does not work, then there is problem with either the VGA cord or laptop's VGA port. To rule out the possibility VGA cord , replace it with new one. Please give the feedback for this so that further diagnosis can be done, if you are comfortable with the TV's electronics.

Hooking a PC to your laptop's screen

Unfortunately you cannot use a laptop screen to view output from other computer sources. As you are surely aware, you may plug another monitor into the VGA plug on the laptop to view the laptop's output, but the plug is only for the laptop's output.

Nice thought, though.

Acer notebook hook-up to T.V

You can! But you need a modern HDTV. If you have one, simply buy a VGA monitor cable. Hook it up to the laptop, (you can't get it wrong). Then put your TV on the VGA input. Hook up the cable.

If you have a Windows Operating System, right click your Desk Top in a blank area and select "Properties."

Then choose the settings tab. Click the 2 monitor and check box will appear asking to "Extend to this monitor." (paraphrased ... I don't recall exactly what it says).

Check the check box then click "OK" and BINGO ... There it is!

Connecting computer to tv

Does the TV have a VGA in?  If yes then hook the VGA cord from the PC to the TV VGA port, then change the source on your TV until you see your PC.  If the signal doesn't come through and you know what source it should be on then try hitting the fn key and F8 which will force it to the TV.  If that doesn't work with the VGA still plugged in restart the computer and it should pick up.
