Question about Canon PowerShot S3 IS Digital Camera

1 Answer

Brand-new Canon Powershot SX120 IS and have put in the batteries and card included in the pack. All seems to be working normally - EXCEPT the screen is continually dark and not showing anything the camera is pointing at. Only the standard icons appear on the screen. The flash seems to be working correctly. Have checked through the instruction manual and not sure what I have done wrong - I have literally set it all up by the book and previous camera was a Canon, so it is fairly familiar with settings etc. Please help!! Thank you.

Thanks rootbeer for your suggestion. You are right; this turns the icons on the screen on & off. I have discovered the settings have an option to turn the lighting on the screen right up and this has corrected the issue.

    Thanks again for your advice!

I am not sure if this advice will work for your model, but it does work for other Canon models.

There is a DISP button on the back. When you push it in, it will turn off the LCD display. Hit it again, and it will keep the display off but show the on-screen icons. Push it again, and the LCD will turn back on. I may be wrong about the order it cycles, but it will cycle through the various modes.

Good luck.

This is normal. You need a memory card to which the SX120 saves pictures.

I dropped my Canon PowerShot SX120 IS Digital Camera and now there is no power. Is there a reset button on the inside or anywhere?

Things to check first for a camera that won't turn on are battery contact points, and micro switches that are located on the battery and memory card doors. Troubleshooting tips on other things that need to be checked may be seen here. These tips won't work for every case, but they're worth a try.

Help with unlock memory card locked problem on Canon PowerShot SX120 IS

Look at your memory card. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

Whenever I put new batteries into my Canon Powershot A480, I get the same thing - I get the 'Low Battery' red flashing light. And Then as I go to take a picture it shuts off and says ; Change The Batties....

I've got the same problem with 2 A 480 canon. I put in NiMH batteries and they work fine. If you put in slightly drained used batteries they work!! Nimh batteries are 1.2 volts and Alkaline are 1.5 volts. There is definitly a problem with this camera. I measured the voltages of brand new batteries 1.51 volts each and they didn't work. I put in some old batteries 1.4 and 1.42 volts and they worked fine.

Canon powershot sx120 si depletes battery life in minutes.

Camera likely has a short, remove the batteries before a circuit completely shorts out and then you'll have no power. You just need to have the camera serviced. The site that is real good for the powershots is: camerasandparts.com In fact, all they do is service for the powershot models, they're amazing if you need help with one of these. I think yours would fall under a power issue and for that model it's only $89 including parts / labor, complete service for the camera, plus the return shipping if you're in the US. They're tough to beat for service for these, they are the place if you need help with a powershot, good luck with the problem.

Canon Powershot A540 - Change Batteries when Batteries Fully Charged

Some of The Canon Powershot A530 and A540 cameras are subject to an advisory recall. Seems that a small spring on the battery compartment door can short out the batteries. Suspect this of yours, in that you mention that your batteries aren't lasting long. If your camera is on the list, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following link for more info:
