Question about Compaq Computers & Internet

2 Answers

I have a Smart Array 431 RAID controller out of an old Compaq server. I cannot find any documentation on the card that describes the pin headers and their functions. There are 5 headers on the board: E1, E2, J11, J12, J15. What I am looking for is anything that will give me LED connections for RAID status.

answer 3, most that is a secret.
HP does not tell, engineering details to that level. why would they?, and let china rip them off.?
    Most here is proprietary.

there is a manual and what you see is what you get.
no exact card stated btw. just 413
lots of 413's made, variants. (years)
The pins are for HP testing in production
the long socket it for the cache ram
    that is big secret too.
and the rear jack is a ISO standard.
    ask.SSF connectors.

the express slot is a standard too.
one connector is the battery 15 pin old design, and 2 pin new(super cap)

    why not say.
    1: what system this is.
2: what are you using the card for?
3: what LED functions do you need.? unstated.
4: what generation server was it? from.
5: do you run HP and HP cage of SAS drivers.
6: or run a driver at the ends of cables.

    is the target system HP
is the target system a server by HP
is the target system non HP (fails)

SOURCE: Not getting a drive letter from Compaq SCSI RAID setup

Did you see any new drives in the disk managemen screen? To get to the disk management, hold window key down and hit 'R', then type diskmgmt.msc and hit enter.

If you do see the drive in the lower half of the screen, you need to initialize the drive either as dynamic disk or basic disk. Then you need to add a new partition and format it.

Good luck.

A disk read error has occurred when booting a Dell PowerEdge 2950. Passes all diagnostics. Will run chkdsk from CD. Raid battery was degraded at last reboot but all disks showed to be fine. Raid 1

what OS?
what disk?
no raid card stated, no array stated, no type of array stated.
One can put 100s of RAID cards in this server.
both raid cards or HBA cards,(forJBOD)
i can fix any server, but first need to know what is in the box first
you meant the boot disk has errors, right,? boot.
that would tell me the disk IS BAD.
but if and ARRAY , that means you must run SMART tests
on the disks, 1 by 1 to find the bad disk.
if smart shows its bad, or weak its for sure BAD.
on real servers. the server sends you email, (set up right)
telling you disk 3 in a RAID 6 is bad, replace it now.

are you running hardware or software raid, or HBA or
fake raid cards, (4 classes there.!)

the base system new has.
4 port SAS 5/i integrated SAS controller (no RAID_
and optional, from DELL , news.
Optional PERC 5/i integrated SAS/SATA daughtercard controller with 256MB cache,
PERC 4e/DC, PERC 5/e adapter

or any of 1000s of other aftermarket cards there.
I run LSI 9361s (with MSM appl loaded)
this card will tell you what disk failed every time no kidding.
so will the PERCs setup correctly
the PERCs and my LSI and my HP raids
all have installed monitors for the RAID ,a program that runs full time all the time, and reports errors , many ways,
did you load that first and use it? seems not.
as no mention of SMART at all.
good luck.
Im not sure the names on DELL , MSM like software.
ah its OSA
never run a PERC lacking this APP. or you can not keep the server on line,.

I have a server with a Serveraid 4H controller card, set up with two Arrays. Array B has 3 72GB drives set up as RAID 5. I would like to add 2 more drives to this array. Is this possible or do I have to...

I am not familiar with your RAID controller card but as long as the controller can see two additional drives, it shouldn't be difficult to add two new drives to your exisiting RAID 5 configuration.

You will probably need to reinitialize the RAID configuration for discs to copy all the parity information so you should refer to the documentation on re-initializing the RAID.

I HAVE HP PROLAINT SERVER INSTALLED WINDOWS 2003 R2 SERVER SOFTWRAE & WHICH IS CONNECTED TO ARRAY OF SCSI HDD THROUGH SMART ARRAY 532 CONTROLLER CARD.NOW OUR PROBLEM IS SERVER IS NOT BOOTING OR...

old G2
new hdd connected to what? you left that fact out.
you never told the configuration of the RAID array now, mode or number of drives present nor if all that works ok. before the act above.
are you using the external channel ports?>

and that all that runs perfectly until you said external above.?
are you adding a new drive to the array, or used drive.

to added a drive you must use the HP special applications to do that correctly and the most easy.
in fact you need to tell it what to do with the added drive to any array or set it up as separate array.
if fact in some cases it will attempt to auto expand the array you have, now , if its allowed (mode limit) and you should not turn off any server, after plugging in new disk, as that error interrupted the in process configurations of said new drive , (bad deal that)

what you do use use the application program(SSA) to see the states of the existing array first then add a drive and tell it what to do with it, that is the process.
for example on striped sets, it can take a day or more to expand.
The more data there the longer. all this is covered at the HPE.com site, how to expand any array. did you ask first how or just throw in a drive? (did you read the limits of each mode of RAID?)
An added driver can be set up as
  • array expansion,
  • or to replace a bad drive
  • or stand alone drive.
  • A hot spare
  • or the beginning of new 2nd array.
and more..... what is your goal here, it was never once stated.
see? (eg I have 5 disk raid
first learn how the SMART works it tricky until learned.

the manual
https://www.manualslib.com/manual/390156/Hp-166207-B21-Smart-Array-5302-32-Raid-Controller.html#manual

the HPE forum , join and ask how to do this. its non trivial !

https://community.hpe.com/

this is the proper program that I use to configure my array
using the HP application called SSA.

http://www.manualsdir.com/manuals/398677/hp-smart-storage-administrator.html?page=18

it cost nothing, its on there down load pages at HPE.com
that is HP enterprise, not HP.com consumer PC site.

here are answers on your 532, , read abit and you learn the ropes.

https://community.hpe.com/t5/forums/searchpage/tab/message?advanced=false&allow_punctuation=true&q=532+

is your 532 bbwc , battery working,? and present.?
if not array expands will be super slow. think SNAIL slow.
the first thing to learn
is what Application, is best, and newest and supports the old G2.
for my G7 is SSA.(the ACU program is old and not good now)
ask HP first that question. many answers there on the forum are wrong due to applications going obsolete, (get the newest program)
and upgrade the card, to newest firmware. allows RAID 6.

Hi does anyone know how to configure the drive array on a compaq ml350?

This model comes with Smart Array 5302/32 Array Controller (Standard with Array Models only) when posting, the server will display the controler mentioned before Smart Array 5302 and an option (press f8) once you have entered this section called ORCA you will have a menu to create, view or delete Raid.
Make sure you have the hdds properly connected before starting so that all hdd are recognized
Good Luck

SCO UNIX ON CAMPAQ ML370 WILL NOT INITIALIZE. AFTER THE SMART ARRAY INITIALIZES, IT INDICATES I NEED TO REPLACE ONE OF MY RAID DRIVES. I HAVE TRIED REPLACING THE DRIVE AND IT WILL NOT MOVE PAST THIS POINT.

Typically, you need to do more than just physically replace the drive.

You need to go into your RAID settings during the POST. Make sure the controller recognizes the drive and add it to the array.

If this helps please vote for my solution.

I can´t use a serial ata disk in a proliant 350

I know ATA disks are cheaper , but they don't last as long or are less reliable.

I do not recommend mixing SCSI and ATA .

Use one or the other , not both.

Do not try , unless your server is non critical.
If it is non critical , why bother with server , a PC will do as well.

Thanks

Scassy Card for Compaq Proliant ML 330 is defective

You cannot find the details of OEM of this card unless it is written on the card itself.
The card is HP/COMPAQ - SMART ARRAY 532 DUAL CHANNEL ULTRA160 SCSI RAID CONTROLLER CARD WITH 32MB CACHE.

If you want to use a different make card. You can safely go with a adaptec make card.
