Question about Sony Handycam DCR-TRV140 Digital Camcorder

1 Answer

When recording, no picture thru viewfinder or lcd panel. Records sound. Was working fine, just started this, and the lens cap is off. Any assistance greatly appreciated.

I think my camera's aperture is stuck. When I press the green button on the Power rocker switch and move that switch to Camera in bright light, a lens systems moves forward. Then pressing the red Record switch, still in bright light, nothing happens. The lens system does not move or change. Can't recall if the eye-like aperture looks like a camera diaphragm or not. Solution (1) seems to imply the trouble is a stuck aperture. Is that true?

It could be either aperture is stuck or ccd imager chip is defective in your camcorder that will be replaced.
In bright light, look into camera lens, turn ON in camera mode and observe does aperture open like an eye?
If you notice some thing opens right in center of camcorder lens then aperture is working and ccd imager chip is bad that will be replaced.
Let me know model number of your Sony camcorder to provide you ccd imager part number info.
Thanks.

When in video recording mode LCD screen and viewfinder are black when the lens cap is off.

It could one of a few problems:

1. The viewfinder is pulled out and "PRIORITY" is set to "FINDER".

Push the viewfinder back in or set "PRIORITY" to "LCD".

2. The LCD monitor's brightness setting is too dark.

Adjust the brightness of the LCD monitor.

3. If the monitor is tilted upward 180 degrees, open the monitor fully.

If the iris is opening to let light in, that light is not being changed to a picture signal or that picture signal is not
going into the camera circuits, What you see in the viewfinder is what is being recorded, Make sure that no cables have been left plugged in to the camera and turn the power on and off several times, I have seen the iris stick when cameras were not used for a while. The iris is inside or behind the lens and closes completely when you turn the camera off, If it is stuck, SOMETIMES it will open with repeated tries of turning it off and on or even removing the battery and putting it back in. And maybe it is just the vibration of opening and closing the battery compartment door or the slight vibrations of pushing the power button repeatedly. If it sticks once, it will stick again. This is not a repair, just a way to get those one time pictures' before.

When I switch to camera - there is no display on the LCD or via the viewfinder. The sound records but no picture. And yes, the lens cap is off!

Try to hook it up to the TV, if you still have no video there is two possibilities. One, IRIS motor is stuck in closed position. Two CCD (imaging IC) went bad and require replacement.
