Internal GPS antenna won't turn off

As soon as the unit is powered on the GPS turns on regardless of antenna position. Is there a way to turn off the GPS on the circuit board. I cannot turn it off using the screen because it is stuck in an on / off loop at power up...which I found out how to resolve but can't with the GPS on. I have opened the unit removed the circuit board and removed the single wire connecting to the flip up antenna and that does not turn off the GPS. What am I missing?

Re: Internal GPS antenna won't turn off

I had the same problem. I pried open the antenna cover about half an inch. Tapped the dislodged magnet out. The quarter inch magnet is fitted into a small oval rubber piece with two small holes one at each end. The rubber piece and the magnet can be reposition back to the two pins close to the edge of the antenna cover.

Re: Internal GPS antenna won't turn off

There is a small round magnet inside the antenna cover which is used by the unit to tell the CPU if the antenna is raised or not.

Most likely you dislodged the magnet when you dropped it. When the antenna is closed the magnet will close the circuit.

This is similar to using those magnetic contact for home windows in a burglar alarm system

Sounds like an antenna problem. Some units have internal antennas and some have external ones that plug into the unit with a small cable. The unit thinks you are still inside and cannot find a satellite to lock on to.

Locks up after a few seconds/have to kill power to reset

This may help. Mine has the GPS antenna build into the bracket at the back. I removed the bracket and the unit did not go into the error screen and the sounder worked fine. The GPS would not locate but it has not antenna attached so DOH!! I have orderd a new antenna with the BNC connector and will post if that fixes the problem. At this point I'm guessing its a blow GPS antenna.

Nuvi 650

Hello Grumpa1350,

There are several possible reasons why a GPS unit might not turn on. For example, there could be something wrong with the charger such as a blown fuse, bad power adapter, or defective cable connection. The internal battery inside of the GPS also might be defective or worn-out. Or, worse yet, the unit may have a more serious hardware fault.

You don't say how you are charging the unit. I'd recommend trying a different charge method. The GPS can be charged one of three ways: connection to you car via the automobile power cord, connection to your computer via a USB cable, or charging from a wall outlet using an optional AC adapter. If you are charging the unit in your car, try connecting it to your computer (or vice versa). If the GPS turns on after being charged using one method but not the other, then that pretty much tells you that the problem is with the cable or adapter being used for charging.

The Garmin NUVI 650 does not contain an internal fuse, but there is a common 3 amp fast-blow fuse located in the vehicle power cord. If you find that the problem happens when trying to charge the unit in your vehicle, then you should change this fuse and see if that corrects the issue. The fuse can be replaced by unscrewing the black round piece at the end of the cigarette lighter plug.

If the unit does not turn on regardless of what charge method you use, then the fault is likely with the GPS itself. Either the internal battery would need to be replaced or the unit would need to be serviced to correct whatever hardware fault is causing the problem.

I would recommend you contact the manufacturer before you attempt to open up the unit. Opening the case of the GPS may void your manufacturer's warranty (if the unit is still under warranty).

Best regards,

had same problem with lms337. i had upgraded the unit but had not upgraded the lms2000 gps module. i was turning the isolator on in the boat which powers up gps module, if the lms337 is not powered up as well the gps unit goes to sleep. the upgrade fixes it by checking that the unit has not been turned on periodically. otherwise as soon as you power up gps module also turn on lms337. lowrance product support sorted this for me.

Fritzed Unit when antenna up

I have a similar problem but I can't turn the GPS off at all, even when the antenna is down. As far as the power on/off cycle, I found another link on this site that said to turn off WAAS while the GPS is off then when you turn it on the unit will not power cycle continuously. You loose the WAAS feature but the GPS and unit still works.

No signal

Remove the Antenna while in the upright position, clean connection and replace. Set the GPS current position. Then initialize the GPS. Select Yes and leave the unit alone for 20 minutes. Do not press anything else. The initialization runs in the background. make sure you have a clean line of sight to the sky. Then turn the unit off and back on. You should be OK.
