Dell Inspiron 5100 PP07L hard drive

I am trying to install a new hard drive into my Dell laptop, (Inspiron 5100 Model PP07L). The connector pins in the laptop are "female" and hard drive are "male" but the hard drive pins can not be inserted into the recessed "female" connector. Is there and extension adapter that I can get to fix this problem or is the hard drive the incorrect type. I have purchased 3 different drives for this laptop and have had the same problem each time. Please advise me of a way to install this drive correctly. Anyway help you have to give would be a blessing. Thanks in advance.

Re: Dell Inspiron 5100 PP07L hard drive

Did you accidentally buy a SATA notebook drive?

If so, this will not work in your notebook, it used IDE drives.

Well the old Dell takes ATA connections. Newer laptops are SATA. Which did you buy?
A new disk drive needs to be partitioned and the operating system needs loaded. Did you do that?
Did you back up all your data to an external device so you can load it on the new disk?

I have a inspirion 6000 it says cant find hard

You may have a bios setting to check, it also may be damage on the connector or on the actual south bridge from over heating. I would load up into the bios and see if your drive is being detected and has the proper settings, try a default bios setting and see if that helps.

Turn off power, remove battery pack, remove all screws on the laptop casing, then pull apart.
Slowly pull cd rom cable attachments straight out. Make sure you do not bend the pins. Then insert new rom drive, then put pc back together, boot and install cd rom drivers.

Hello, I get the folliwing message by starting my laptop dell inspiron 5100: The operating system not found. Please could you provide any solution to solve the problem. Thanks. Chahin

this happens when there is damage to the windows installation, or the hard drive itself. test your hard drive using an external hard drive casing, if the hard drive works then you can just copy your files to another computer, then reformat the hard drive put it back in your laptop and reload windows

This would be a good time to upgrade to Windows XP Professional. I think your disk from Dell is bad because you are going about it the right way.

One suggestion is to put your windows cd in the cdrom drive. Browse the cd for a file called setup, click on that and setup should run from there.
