External hard disk installation

hi
i have a HP laptop using windows vista
i am trying to connect a external hard disk (manufacturer : Advance or Adiance ?)
when i connect the USB cable, nothing appears in the hard drives list nor pops up
i cannot either find the hard disk when i do "install new device"

can anybody help me ?

- tks but i've checked in device manager and USB ports work

impossible to check hard drive as i cannot open it.,let me know if i cannot do it in another way

when i try "add a non plug and play", ,windows don't find the hard disk ...

any idea

Try another USB cable, or another USB port.

plz check your usb port if other device read ...........then your external hard disk so error. or if ex hard ok...you install windows vista .
