Question about Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-S40 Digital Camera

1 Answer

DSC-S40 Can view pictures but camera shuts off when turned to camera mode

This Just Started happening. The camera will not turn on in the picture capture mode or the Video Capture Mode. It gets power but goes off in - less than a second. I can turn the camera on in Picture Viewing Mode.

Another friend of mine had the same problem. Is this common to Sony Cyber-Shot ?

I assume so...mine is doing it as well. Even weirder is you hold a combo of buttons (i think power and mic, I dont remember exactly) and you can go into this manufacturers menu for setting up and testing the device. In that, it will take pictures and everything...and still i cannot get it to stop shutting off like that. It makes a weird clicking noise when it shuts off too...sounds like the shutter perhaps. Click click. If you find a solution to it please email me at [email protected]

How can I transfer my 8mm tape to my computer? I need to have the film on a flash drive or dvd.

Assuming that you want to do your video work later (editing,DVD burning)in your PC.

1.Your PC must have video capture device(either built-in or add-on).
2.Properly set your video editing software to able to capture video form your device.
3.Connect your camera to your PC in regular manner, like when you connect it to your TV.
4.Have your camera in PLAYBACK mode.wind the tape to the beginning of the footage you want to capture.
5.Open your editing software.turn on capture mode.
6.Start capture. At the same time, start playing back the footage on the cam.
7.When all footage were captured, click stop capture.
8.Start your editing work.
9.when complete, save it to some uncompressed video format like *.avi for later burning to DVD or converting to other format.

For beginners,I recommend Windows Movie Maker video editing software that should come bundled in almost every computer. It's fast, simple but effective enough for home-movie work.Once your project is completed, save your movie in original .avi format for later burning to DVD,etc.

BTW forget the old-school Linear Editing (on the tape) thing. It's slow, complicate and much less flexible than Non-Linear method.

Camera is stuck in voice record mode when I turn the camera on and I cant change it to camera mode

I have the same problem - mine is from using the camera in the pit at a concert - I think the camera got wet to some degree. I have found a way to get to picture capture mode, but it is a workaround and not a fix.

If you hold the display button (>) in for a couple of seconds, and then turn the camera on, it will go into playback mode without the lens extending. From there, if you press display button (>) again, it will go into picture capture mode.

I'm still hoping that there is some way to fix this, but haven't found one yet.

Blurry video recording

Since the camcorder returns to the auto shutter setting and the auto exposure setting when it's switched into Night Capture mode, I would say that might be your problem.  Change your shutter and exposure settings. To do this, switch to Camera mode, turn the menu dial to the setting you wish to change then press enter.  You may have to play with the settings until you get the desired picture. Remember, faster shutter speeds for faster action (stop action), and longer exposure settings for darker situations. Let me know if you need more help.

No picture

CCD sensor might be faulty. To check see if you get immage in playback mode ( some old tapes you know were captured properly ) if playback is fine but no image in capture mode ( i.e. camera mode ) then CCD transducer is kaput ; camera must go in.

Can my camcorder work with imovie and if so how do i get my computer to get download my video?

Open iMovie and set it to capture DV. (Click the camera shaped icon opposed to the siscor scissor shape) When you see a blue screen that says (camera connected) and the image pops on screen of image from tape on camcorder set in play mode, you hit the import button and it begins to capture digital movie using DV compression of whatever you have on tape. You should be able to control your camcorder with the video controllers underneath the project window to make selections for the in and outpunts on the tape you wish to capture. Then switch to edit mode by clicking on the scissor button and import the movies you just captured or use them from the clips menu, etc. renedr movie back to tape, if you wish by clicking back and forth from edit mode (scissors) and capture mode (camera silo) and render to and from tape.
