DSC-S40 Can view pictures but camera shuts off when turned to camera mode

This Just Started happening. The camera will not turn on in the picture capture mode or the Video Capture Mode. It gets power but goes off in - less than a second. I can turn the camera on in Picture Viewing Mode.

Another friend of mine had the same problem. Is this common to Sony Cyber-Shot ?

I assume so...mine is doing it as well. Even weirder is you hold a combo of buttons (i think power and mic, I dont remember exactly) and you can go into this manufacturers menu for setting up and testing the device. In that, it will take pictures and everything...and still i cannot get it to stop shutting off like that. It makes a weird clicking noise when it shuts off too...sounds like the shutter perhaps. Click click. If you find a solution to it please email me at Garry_NEC@hotmail.com

The only functioning modes are the picture viewing & set up modes

Have Sony DSC-P73 with exact problem. Only turns on in SETUP mode and when switches to all other modes camera shuts off usually with lens extended. Have tried new batteries - new memory stick - new everything and nothing helped. I just took out the batteries and attached the AC ADAPTER and all works perfectly now so problem is with either batteries - battery compartment or battery connections. As long as you do not need a "PORTABLE" camera, using AC Adapter solves this problem :)

It could be that the battery isn't holding a charge anymore if you are using rechargeable batteries in you camera. Most of them have a short life to them. If you can get a hold of another one, see if that solves that problem.

VGA 640x480 is the smallest you can set the camera to.

My camera turns off .

Try changing the batteries.
I had the same problem and realised the camera is sensitive to the type of batteries you use.  I had put in non rechargable batteries.  Some brands seem to work and some don't, but rechargables are best, particularly the original sony batteries .

Viewing is fine, taking pictures is not

This sounds like what started happening with my camera a few weeks ago. I found that turning the LCD screen off during picture-taking allows me to take pictures. I then have to go into review mode to look at the pictures I took using the LCD screen. Definitely not a great fix. I'm trying to locate a firmware upgrade that may solve it.
