I have a similar set of Boston Acoustics speakers, which work fine for my tower. I find it hard to believe that they would just fail outright, and also that (unless you bought an upgraded sound system) you would have digital-only for your audio. I would recommend to check the basics first.
Check the speakers on another device. Mp3 player will work fine.
check the sound card on your computer (use a set of headphones or another speaker set).
you find they weren't plugged in, powered on, etc. resolve that.
Usually the power plugs are black, and only fit in one spot. The audio
cable to plug into the computer is similar to a headphones jack (3.5mm).
On most computers the audio output (speakers) port is colored green.
none of these get you fixed, go into the control panel and click the
sounds icon. From there you can view your volume levels (is the sound
muted?), view your playback device (it might have a hardware problem, or
be disabled), and test the settings.
If you are
still stuck after this please also post your version of windows, and the
make/model of your computer. If you know it, the type of audio device
you are using would also be helpful. (if it's a Dell standard device or perhaps an upgraded Creative or other brand device + model #)
It sound like you have a break in the main wire from the computer sound card to your speaker amp OR the plug is not plug in completely plugged in all the way. Try some other speakers or ear buds / head phones to isolate sound card problem or speaker problem.
The cable you are using to connect to the speakers could be duff or the connectors could just be dirty. clean the connectors and push it in and out of the socket repeadedly to ensure you have a good connection. Or you could try a different cable.
If after connect your usb speaker cable the system it is asking for software (drivers) you have to install them to get your audio working properly. Check it out the box of your new speakers for a installation CD.
You can also verify:
Check if your audio es working properly (start >> control panel >> sound and audio devices) Check if your sound card is properly installed (My pc >> Properties >> Hardware >> Device Manager >> Audio)
Try plugging them into the jacks on the back of the PC case. Make sure you connect the right connector to the right jack. If this works, then there is a problem with the front jacks. Sometimes they are left unattached when the PC is assembled.
Also, check in control panel under sounds and make sure you have a sound scheme selected. If it says no sound scheme, select one, the click NO if Save sound scheme prompt comes up.
