Re: Memory Sockets

The following link provides the manual for dissembly of the zv5160us.
On the bottom back of the computer I removed the three screws that holds the strip cover on just like it says on page 5-30. I flipped the computer over and with the help of a small flat blade screwdriver I popped the Strip Cover off. NOTE: Tilt the screen to be horizontally flat (wide open, screen facing upward) with the main body of the computer to allow the three cowl-like hindge cover to free up as you are popping off the Strip Cover. Once the Strip Cover is off you can see the four screws that hold on the keyboard. Remove the four screws ten the keyboard lifts up very easily and then you can see the main memory socket.

Re: Memory Sockets

On this laptop there should be a small door on the bottom of the laptop that has one very small screw in it. It is usually in the center of the laptop. If it is not there then you will need to check out the manual listed above because they will be under the keyboard.

Ram upgrade

The best way to find out for sure how much ram your computer could take is to do a scan with the Crucial scanner.
Go to and click on "Scan My System" 1539d96.jpg

Now you're going to download the scanner. Click the checkbox to agree to the ToS and Download the Scanner.

Depending on the browser you're using, you're going to click "Run" or "Save". I'm using Google Chrome so I only got the "Save" option. Click or double-click to run the scanner.

Allow the program to run if it asks you if you're sure you want to run it.
Crucial gives you a recommended max-it-out RAM config if you wish to max out your memory.

However the pricing can be quite a little steep, so if you just want information about what kind of RAM your computer needs and what it would run best with, the section below carries this information (directly below from the above screenshot).

You can take this bit of information to your local Best Buy or Fry's or any preferred computer store and they can help you with what you're looking for.
Hope this helps :)

Whether DDR is compatible for hp pavilion dv1000 or only sdram is compatible. With which ram can i upgrade.

According to the maintenance manual only 266Mhz Ram can be added to the notebook.
This would be SDRAM.
Hope this helps!!

Where are the 2 sockets for RAM memory located? One is at the back of the laptop in the center, where is the SECOND ONE? They are not in the same location. Please, I need the exact location.

The 2 memory slots are in the same location. The memory modules essentiall lie on top of each other. If you open the back cover you will see 2 slots in which you insert the memory modules. They're referred to as slot Aand slot B.

Bios Password

Hi there.
1. Turn the computer OFF, if it's on.
2. Remove the memory module cover, on the bottom of the computer.
3. Check the configuration of memory modules in the two sockets. It's necessary to have a memory module present in the outermost socket only.
  • If there is a memory module in only the outermost socket (the one farthest from the system board), then continue to step 4.
  • If there is a memory module in only the innermost socket, move it to the outermost socket.
  • If there are memory modules in both sockets, remove them both, then re-insert one of them into the outermost socket.
4. Carefully peel back the black Mylar film. Pull this film to the side enough to expose the B500 solder pads. Do not remove the film completely, because it may be difficult to re-attach it correctly.
5. Short the B500 solder pads on the system board. Needle-nose pliers or a flat-blade screwdriver works well to short them.
6. While continuing to short-circuit the solder pads, turn the computer on, and continue shorting the pads until the Toshiba Logo Screen appears. then remove the short.
7. Re-position the Mylar film over the system board.
8. If you removed a memory module, turn the computer OFF, then re-insert it.
9. Re-attach the memory slot cover.
10. turn on computer, if it boot password has been removed.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!
