How do you reload the Firmware? I don't even know what that is. If i reload it, will that resolve the frequent problems i have with my zen? It doesn't run regularly, but it always goes into Recovery Mode.

  • Anonymous Mar 01, 2008

the zen does this as follows:

if i press 'clean up' it says 'scan disk' and then says 'cleaning' and it's done very quickly.

If i press 'format all' it says formatting, and then says 'freespace 28565.4MB'

If i press Reboot, it reboots quickly, and says the same thing on it's screen 'v0.0.22'

If i press 'Reload Firmware', it tells mem to reload a firmware via USB. it then says 'start firmware update now', but when i try to update it's firmware, the computer won't even display that the Zen is even connected. what do i do!

Firmware error. Could not load firmware because I could not get the recovery program to find the player.

Followed Kniteoflight's fix and it worked.

I had the Exact same problem and no one had a good solution, i only found one that finally worked after spending 4 freakin hours tryin to fix it. anyway here is the solution.

you need to use a computer that has Windows XP, then if the computer is running any version of Windows media player other than 10, roll back or upgrade to Media player 10. restart the computer.

Now, you need to download and run http://www.delldjsite.com/forums/attachm... honestly i have no idea what it does. my guess is it reinstalles the USB ports
but thats only a guess. but i was so frusterated by the time i found
this solution that i was willing to try anything. so download this
file, unpack it and run it. then it will ask you to restart. when your
computer is restarted run the new firmware file ( i used 1.62.2.0) and
    it works.

Why? i have no idea, but it i was pumped. the origional site i got this solution from is http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/sho...

Is there any way that I can get that File from that dell Dj site somehow? Do you guys have a description of the file? Because I'm having the same exact problem uploading the firmware and I am following your steps. That's the only step i have left.

To Reload Firmware:

WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER 11 IS THE PROBLEM!!!!!!!

You have to use a computer that has XP and does not have Windows Media Player 11 installed. (Trying on a Vista computer is useless, as Vista has WMP11 as the standard player and cannot be uninstalled. Another **** thing to add to the list of Vista..Bill Gates software sucks!!)

Get on a computer with XP and uninstall WMP11 if it is intalled....
1. Open Control Panel / Add and Remove Programs
2. Check the box "Show Updates"
3. Find the WMP11 update and uninstall it.

Now thats done, download the firmware for the Vision M: 30GB from www.creative.com/support
1. Choose "MP3 Players"
2. Scroll to the end of the page and choose the link "If your product is not listed..."
3. Choose "Zen" from the first box, then select the "Vision M: 30GB" from the 2nd box
4. Click on Next
5. Now select "Download" under the Firmware Heading and save it to your computer (Saving on the Desktop is best)

1. Plug in your Vision M:30GB after the firmware is downloaded.
2. Close the Autoplay feature for the Vision M:30GB if it opens.
3. Open the Downloaded Firmware file from your desktop.
4. The "Upgrade" button on the update firmware program SHOULD be available. (It was for me)
5. Click on the Upgrade button.
6. The Vision M:30GB should display "Upgrading firmware" in the Recovery screen of the player as well as on the program.
7. After the Firmware is loaded the player you should get a message "Update Successful" and the player should reboot and rebuild before showing the menu screen....
.......and the firmware is installed!

(Note: I got a message of "Upgrade Failed" the first time I tried to reload but it did load the second time I tried)

50% of the time, when the Upgrade button is grayed out, it means you have a hardware problem. If you have not yet tried the Format option, do so now. Then reboot your player and your computer, and connect again via USB cable. If it is STILL not recognized, then you have a hardware problem with your Zen.

Stuck in recovery mode--would love to avoid buying a new mp3

I had the same problem as your and it stopped working yesterday. After search for helps and now it is working again after I reloaded the firmware. But unfortunately everything is gone. You have to reload your musics again. You can try this out: 1) go to creative labs website to download the "Recovery Tool". 2) at Recovery Mode of your zen there are options: Clean Up, Format All, Reload Firmware, and Reboot. Try out Clean Up first if it still not working then try to Format All. After that try the Reload Firmware. After you done the Reload Firmware. 3) Shut down your Zen and try to connect it to your computer. Now your Zen will automaticlly power On and computer will recognize it as a drive. 4) Open the Recovery Tool you have downloaded at creative labs website. This tool will detect your Zen and follow it's instructions: It works with my windows Vista. Well, it works for me, I think it will work for your too. Good Luck!
May God bless.

Hard drive

Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.

Zen vision m firmware problem

Dear All this problem is caused if the computer has windows media player 11 installed. I googled this for days trying to fix it - & was relieved when i finally sorted it - it's very easy. Just do the following.
Use a computer that has XP (either pro or home edition) (forget about vista....). go to add/remove programs - uninstall windows medi player - on my PC it does a roll back to WMP version 9. There's also a program called "Windows media format runtime 11" which comes with WMP11 & you need to uninstall this too - otherwise it still won't recognise the player.

Then restart your PC. Then make sure you have downloaded the lastest firmware version - just google it - trying to find the right one on the creative website is not easy - their website is poor - there are quite a few other places you can download it from.

Then I clicked the "reload firmware" option in the recovery mode (I had already deleted it 4 days ago). Then when your PC has restarted plug in your Zen, it should come up something like "MTP device recognised". Now when you double click on the firmware downloaded to install - it it will recognise the player & you can click the upgrade button. It does the upgrade & puts the firmware back on the ZEN. I got a message saying "firmware upgrade failed" at the end although when I started the player - it booted up as normal & I was able to reload & play my music.

This sure beats the "send it back to John Lewis, pay 60 quid & wait 6 weeks for it to come back " option - if like mine it's out of warranty

Problems with Reloading Firmware. Please Help.

to upgrade firmware you have to do it from the pc.

try downloading the
MP3 player recovery tool from Creative's website (the tool contains the latest firmware update available -- 1.15.03). Plug your ZV+ into your PC, run the program and let it update the firmware. Then format, reload your music and try it.

By the way, before updating the firmware, let the battery have a full charge, ok?
