I have a brand new LG 50 plasma and a Bravia Sony surround sound system as well as a Cox Cable HD DVR box. I currently have it connected as such: HDMI from Bravia Sony System direct into TV HDMI from Cable box to TV Opitical cable from Cable box to TV I get wonderful surround sound when I play a DVD but there is absolutely no sound when I just want to watch TV. What am I doing wrong?

You may have to set the input value on the bravia for optical on the input from the cable box. sometimes there is more than one way for a particular input to receive an audio signal, you may have rca(red and white), a black or orange rca type for digital, and then the optical. i would suspect you have to tell the bravia how the sound is inputed into the bravia. also , just a thought.... on the cable box there should be a volume control on the front of the box........ make sure the cable box volume is ALL the way up (it is the preamp volume).

How do I connect my old Sony 5.1 surround system to my new LG Plasma set?

You should be able to run most of your systems trough it. I do belive that it has IR connections that either your TV or possibly the cable box has to export the audio to the Sony. Hope this helps

Most likelly it is your DVR that has a problem. Their are a lot of issues with those DVR's from the cable or satellite companies. I would recomend swapping it out.

Sony BDV-370 DVD/5.1 theater hooked to Sony Bravia TV and cable box. No sound comes from rear or center speakers with HD cable.

Three things can cause this:
1) not all HD is recorded in surround sound. You can very well watch an HD program that just has Left/Right stereo audio. Tombstone on bluray is even only in Dolby 2.0
2) wrong connection is used. If you only use red/white analog stereo cables you will only get sound out of the left/right mains.
3) setting on the cable box is set to stereo and not surround. Changing this varies by cable box manufacturer.

Connect lifestyle 48 to plasma and dvr

You need to buy a Bose VS 2, video enhancer. Your cable/sattelite, vcr and aux connect to the VS 2 and the VS2 connects one HDMI cable to the TV. The VS2 then upconverts DVDs played on the lifestyle through the VS2/HDMI.

Normal Picture Mode Not Available With Cox HD-DVR (Motorola DCH3416) and HDMI Cable

With an HDMI cable connected, the cable box determines the picture size. The settings on the cable box must be changed in order for you to get the correct picture size. I have some experience with Motorola cable boxes; usually to access the settings you turn the box OFF and then press the menu or settings button on the box to bring up the display menu. Hope this helps!
