Several things may be bad. First bad capacitors can prevent this set from coming on. A bad flyback and a bad Horizontal Transistor may destroy your TV. One of the most common problems with this TV was sound and no picture. This fix required the removal of a coil in front of the Horizontal transistor. Remove the coil and clean the legs, and the surface on the board where you will resolder! Hope this helps with your solution. Thanks for asking and show a few hands of support!
I am by no means an expert but i have the same type of TV and have a similiar problem, first I thought it might be a heat-induced effect so I vacuumed the interior but no joy--then I carefully inspected the main board and found two components that looked melted. So I would suggest you vaccum the interior and then inspect. But be careful as I found one capacitor on the board that still had a charge after 3 days of the set being turned off, you might want to verify things with a multimeter before poking around.
It sounds like there is a possiblity that something is failing in the power supplie or the scan circuits. This can be anything from a failing component(s) to a cold solder connection.
I also found with the RCA sets that when there are intermittant failures they are very sensitive to have their EPROM programing go corrupted. This is something that only the RCA factory service rep, or a TV shop who has the knowledge about it, has the setup, and can re-program it.
If you have the set off, and the cable plugged into the back of the set for a day or so, the guide plus should come back. It will sometimes take up to 48 hours. If it does not, there is a problem with the set and will require servicing. Good Luck
with the tv off press and hold the volume down button on the tv & clear button on the remote for 5 to 7 seconds. perhaps you can borrow a friends remote for a day to fix it. good luck.
the symptom is usually caused by a breakdown in the power supply circuit. in most modern receivers (transistorized and/or ic), it may also be caused by a breakdown in the horizontal deflection circuits (hor. oscillator, pre-drive, or drive circuits). supply voltages for the tuner, vif, sif, and vertical output are usually supplied by the horizontal output circuit. but if you doesnt know anything about these stuffs, better bring it to a qualified service tecnhician
