When you had the drums off, did you inspect the shoes for excessive wear? And How do the drums look? Are they grooved? Can you be more specific about the loud noise. Does it sound like a grinding noise, or a screeching or pulsating noise. Is it lower pitch or high pitch?
Your description makes me worry. If you have a strange, unknown screeching noise coming from the right rear wheel and now there is a burning smell. Please stop using it and have it looked at as soon as possible. There are a few things that could be the cause of these symptoms. Wheel bearing failure, seized brake caliper or frozen caliper sliders, damaged brake line, seized E-brake cable, or improperly installed brake-pads. In any case, if you continue to drive this car, with these symptoms. You may cause a break-down (requiring a tow), or cause a fire. Let me know if I can answer any other questions or how the repair goes, good luck.
is it a loose fan belt this will make a scretching noise thats the cheapest thing expensive things if its a manuel could be a thrust bearing on the gear box or worse still an imput shaft bearing on gear box but i think it will be just the fan belt screeching
the screeching noise could be rubber deposits on the belt pulley or pulley bearings for the power steering pump BUT its also a big clue that the timing belt tensioner is about to give up...CHECK BOTH please.....
If your C/V joint is going bad it will make a nasty clicking sound and get louder the longer you leave it unattended. If this noise went away it could have been something stuck it the moving area of your wheel and just worked itself out.Keep an ear out for the noise to return,it it dosen't come back be happy.
Check all the bolts and fastenings for the heat shrouds around the exhaust manifold to make sure they are there (and firm). If you can undo them without snapping them, take the shrouds off to check for gravel trapped in that area. It could also be a failing cat converter, but a lot less likely. My next step would be to remove the rocker cover and have a look......
