RCA OPAL M4008 screen is blank and now it won't come on

The screen went blank even though the music is still playing. I have reset it and that isn't working. When I plug it into the computer, it shows all the information that is on the opal. Can you help me with this?

Re: RCA OPAL M4008 screen is blank and now it won't come...

Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.

I have an rca opal#M4208GR-B that seems to have lost the ability to show which songs are on the menu. In fact, the entire choice for music, radio etc. has disappeared leaving only the icons such as hammer...

i have the same damn problem. On the menu screen, i don't see any words, letters and ect. I only see the icons. When I try playing the music on my opal m4208-GR, It only shows a black screen. So i don't know what too do. I tried reformatting and the firmware update. Im guessing you have too kill the battery for the whole day. Try playing the mp3 all day until the battery drains out. Hopefully it can regain memory after that.

Opal m4008 cant put music on it

Here's a link and a suggestion - not only may the firmware upgrade improve functionality and restore missing files, it will also delete all your songs so you can start over from scratch:

Firmware: Opal M4004, M4008, M4018, MC4004, MC4008 and MC4018 Firmware If you are experiencing difficulties with your Opal device check the hold button located on the right hand side of your player, if should be in a down position. If you believe your firmware may be corrupted, use this file to restore the original (OEM) firmware.
Firmware v1.2.8.0 Enhancements:
  • Enhanced voice recording performance
  • Enhanced battery charging capabilities
Firmware v1.2.4 Enhancements:
  • Improved charging compatibility with Windows™ 2000
  • Improved user experience when shutting down
  • Improved the functionality of the “Menu” button
  • Added device screensaver (visible when connected via USB)

Its actually an rca opal M4008

myspacepepe this just worked for me. Try downloading the firmware here:

Then read this solution another user posted. Hopefully this helps you. I had the same issue.

I had this problem. Backing up data wasn't a concern though, as I hadn't anything on the OPAL yet.
First I let the OPAL charge up for 3 hours. Then I made sure it was powered off. I had previously downloaded onto a PC the firmware update for the M4004 which also works on the M4008 and other OPAL's. I plugged the OPAL into the PC, and booted up the PC. After installing the firmware package in the PC, you get an install screen for the new firmware with a format option for the OPAL. I selected that option, but the "start" button was greyed out as the PC still couldn;t see the OPAL. I pressed the reset (paperclip in the back of the OPAL) for about 15 seconds, than held down the "Play" button and waited. Eventually the software recognized the OPAL, and started to format it.
If you get a dialogue to restart the PC, press NO! You have to read the instructions that come with the install. Eventually I reformatted the drive, and installed new firmware.
BTW, there was no picture folder after I did this, so I just created a new folder named picture and it worked fine for the thumbnail pics I threw in there. Also when I use a MAC with the OPAL, I power the MAC up with the OPAL off but attached. After drag and dropping files into the OPAL, I power down the MAC. After power down the OPAL will after a pause give the "building databases please wait" messages, then when done go to the start menu. It is difficult on a MAC to eject the OPAL, it just reappears on the desktop so shutting down is the only safe way to administer the device. But to update firmware, which is easily corrupted BTW if you unplug the thing at the wrong time, you HAVE to do it on a PC operating system. Might work on an Intel MAC with a PC OS though.
Hope this helps.

M4008 Opal mp3 player error message

I went to the rca site and downloaded the firmware update. It told me how to reset the unit. You have to let it crash, then start it from the Start menu. Then you plug in your player while holding down the play button while it loads. It managed to get it running but I still can't add music.

Mp3 music plays but

The Opal has a reset hole on the back of the unit in which a toothpick (non metallic) can be inserted to reboot the player.
If this does not work, I suggest that you reformat the player by using the WindowsTM format command on the unit. To reformat the memory
  1. Right click on the device within the Explorer or My Computer window
  2. Select the format command (full format) to reformat the internal memory of the device.
  3. Reinstall the firmware from
